She mentioned it on CBC this morning as greenhouse gas mitigation including solar.

    Initial Cost Dec 2019 - $550m
    City $275m, CSEC $275m

July 2021 Cost - $608.5m. This was the first time that the deal wasn't going to happen. CSEC pays a little more to keep the project moving.
    City $287.5m (+$12.5m), CSEC $321m (+$46m)

Oct 2021 Cost - $634m. This is the latest projection. Things still going ahead.
    City $287.5m (+12.5m), CSEC $346.5m (+$71.5m)

All of the above so far seems like it's from cost increases. City then adds $19m of scope creep, and want to split the cost with CSEC. Ya, I can see why they're saying fuck off.

I'm surprised CSEC didn't kill the deal earlier and still committed to an additional $71.5m plus be responsible for overruns, especially when their PR listed increasing costs as a factor. So they were ok with that at first, but the outlook is probably pretty fucking brutal (costs went up another $25m in 3 months lol). They're not OK with the city cramming more shit in on principal, or the fact the city can keep fucking them and adding more shit down the line.

So @killramos is right, an easy out on spiralling costs. First increase was $46m after 19 months. Then it was $25m after 3 months.

You don't need to spend a billion dollars to watch some kids from Sweden and North Battleford wack some pucks with sticks.

I get why they are pulling out. Yet, I feel they are technically still interested, but don't want to continue springing for the overruns - so hardball it is.

This is great news. I'm glad both parties agreed to not build an albatross with public money and they're just trying to PR the exit.
On the face of it this all seems great. But I bet its back on within 18mo with the city footing the entire bill.

I'm surprised anyone thought this would get built for less than $1 billion.

Gondek is an absolute clown. Her tweets were such an underhanded move to make CESC look bad while twisting the narrative, and she was very successful at that. Sports social media ate up her bullshit comments. This has pretty much been her style for everything since she came into office. I personally don't really care about a new arena, sure it would be nice to see high end concerts here, but her fucking manipulation drives me up the wall.

So @killramos is right, an easy out on spiralling costs. First increase was $46m after 19 months. Then it was $25m after 3 months.
A large chunk of the July and October jumps was CSEC taking on the added costs, but in exchange for getting their own project manager in and CMLC out, which also prompted the additional design cost changes (getting rid of some 12th Ave frontage, parkade on the East side, etc.) So CSEC was basically taking on the extra costs with the hope it would help them out in the long run at managing costs by buying out the design and project management control.

So that plus the added cost overrun risk becomes a much more expensive proposition than anybody had planned for.

talk is cheap, and its becoming increasingly clear Gondek has nothing else of substance between her ears to back it up.

It's certainly better for the climate NOT to build an arena. Big win for Climate Emergency.

It's because the building was designed to be extremely ugly. They pulled the pin.

Also, Gondek is the worst. 4 more years.

Can we rename it Climate Pledge Arena? That would get built in a heartbeat . . .

What if CoC does a worldwide GoFundMe. Call it the Greta arena and we'll prolly get the entire thing for free.

Any $300M+ naming rights deal like the Climate Pledge Arena would do it, probably.

For that money you could call it the Drill, Baby, Drill Arena.

Finally a great idea from Kert! Lets run a "Fuck Trudeau" fundraiser. All proceeds from stickers and flags go towards naming rights of the same. It would get built tomorrow.

You realize that’s just a voluntary tax right?

It's nice to see all sides of the political spectrum come together here. Warms my heart.

    Good call.

Now they can spend all that extra money on more bike lanes, art light hoops and other useless bullshit.
