"A few council members, as well as the city’s chief financial officer, expressed anxiety about the financial burden that would be placed on the city by approving all four projects — including concerns over the city’s liquidity and future costs as a result of Green Line construction.
But a majority of council, including Mayor Naheed Nenshi, argued that the city has sufficient capacity to accomplish all four projects and the ability to change course if financial circumstances change."
Accountant: We can't afford this
Spendshi: STFU, yes we can
?
Nenshi + majority of council. Who were the 'yes' votes on this?

Looks like a deal has been agreed upon and will be presented at council on Monday

I can eat more hot wings than you.
Nenshi gearing up to call this a great win for the city and attempt to get votes in the next election.
Druh has to say no because her electorates don't like sports.
Don't expect to hear public details Monday. They are going to keep people in the dark as long as possible.
I dont understand how, with just announced 60,000,000$ cuts - spending insane amounts on this shit, is going to get him votes? This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
I’m pretty sure he’s not running again. This term is about his legacy. Hence Olympics, entertainment district, etc. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Feels like he DGAF this year about public opinion. Not much clever quips or retorts when he’s criticized publicly.

Also the big rumour around CoC is monday is massive layoff day from what I have heard.
Good timing.

I think my favourite part is the ‘CSEC won’t move the flames’... wouldn’t they just sell the flames to another ownership group, who would then move them? Little too rah rah rah for me
Funny, that was my thoughts exactly. Build the franchise a bit and then leave in a few years because of "insane operating costs brought on by the CoC" ..... hahaThis quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
What an awful deal.
This is what happens when you have an amateur mayor with a bunch of amateur councillors handling billions of dollars. Really bad decisions.
Hilarious that after all this time, with some moving numbers from one column to another, the city landed itself a worse deal but infographic made it look better. So much time wasted.
Also funny how Nenshi is all over how great this is now.

Fuck this guy. Wasn't he left out of all discussions with the CSEC cause the city knew they'd get nowhere with him on the board? This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

@rage2 do you have the old graphic?

The 2 most obvious pieces are that ticket tax is now considered revenue for the city, and saddledome demo isn’t include in city contribution even though it’s on the city. The bulk of the revenue is just shit that existed in previous proposals that were completely left out such as incremental property tax. The $75m is the only question mark, it’s CSEC’s “rent” for the saddledome today, so hard to say if that was really cut out in the previous proposal. Demo costs are also magically lower.
If you go back to the early parts of the thread, the CalgaryNext numbers are even more hilarious with the city tackling interest paid as city contribution. That doesn’t even show up here.
Also hilarious, city owned is now a good thing with a big thumbs up lol. This was the biggest contention because city owned means no property taxes collected.
Anyways, funny to see how ppl all of a sudden think it’s a great deal now when they were so anti flames when they walked away. The deals aren’t that much different with the city actually contributing a little bit more than the Flames proposal. I’d have to spreadsheet it when I have time to see what the true differences are.

I think most of the public has just gotten worn down by all the BS with respect to a new arena and most DGAF anymore. Next up will be the Green Line, actually the BS has already started on that one. And then there's good, old McMahon, plugging away, forgotten once again while other smaller cities manage to get new or very nicely updated stadiums. Calgary is a bit of anamoly when compared to other major sports cities and their infrastructure, an ancient football stadium, no field house and pretty much an ancient arena as well. Oh, and no race track either, oval, drag strip and/or road course. And not even a kart racing facility as they set up up shop out at Strathmore. But there is the motocross track and Spruce Meadows, yay.
Will fuck off, again.
TL;DR.
As someone who lived in Edmonton throughout their debacle to get their "OmG we must have this arena immediately because needs because revenue because needs!!!" nonsense I gotta laugh at how this project is in its infancy and folks are talking like it's about to happen. Plus, the nonsense competition between the cities is just fueling the fire.
Be jealous of Edmonton's new barn if you want but at the end of the day, it took well over a decade and when it finally got done, they ran the mayor out of town and decimated the provincial party he attempted to lead. It's not a bumpy road ahead, it's some Cliff Road Truckers shit and Calgary is still a full decade away from making the same mistake Edmonton did - replacing an adequate arena with a mega-million$ construction nightmare that upon completion, still has several thousand seats short of what would consistently sell and completely sell out during playoffs.
Oh and the part of town where the old arena is? It's like Mad Max Detroit ghetto, now.
Get ready to make the same mistakes. All of them.
Isn't Calgary in some sort of financial fiasco right now? I thought they jacked business taxes up like 400% since 2015 or something just to keep the lights on.
Looking around
Wondering what became
Of what I once knew
