That seems to be for larger drones though no?

It's technically outlawed in parks (see #24):

If it's only parks, I don't know where else you can fly them. Parking lots? The reason I say they shouldn't be allowed within city limits is because there are too many obstacles (cars, powerlines, people, buildings and so on)

The link from the city appears to be intended for commercial, not recreational purposes.

The only ban I can find is city parks:

No Person shall set off, launch or operate, while in a Park:
    (a) any fireworks, explosive devices or rockets;
    (b) any glider or hot air balloon; or
    (c) any remote control device including boats, planes, helicopters or cars;
except where such activity is specifically allowed by the Director.
Further, a quote from the City Bylaw officer from CBC article in 2013.

Calgary Bylaw Services says it doesn't have any rules for the emerging technology yet.

Tons of open area around the city - grass land, etc.

^ thats kinda my thoughts. I'd get a FPV drone with night vision or FLIR and just fly around dusk/night time.

You still really can't legally fly in Calgary due to the airport/heli pad regulations. Not to mention the built up areas/people regulations. People may fly in Calgary but you are violating the law. PFV is just straight up banned since it violated line of sight...

must be operated within visual line-of-sight
pilot must be 18, or be at least 16 and conducting research under the supervision of an academic institution
have no less than $100,000 in UAV liability insurance coverage
cannot operate a UAV in any special aviation event such as an airshow
pilot cannot use a first person view
can only operate one UAV at a time
can only fly during daylight hours
must keep below 300 feet above ground and only in uncontrolled airspace
cannot fly over a forest fire area, or over any area that is located within 5 nautical miles of a forest fire
must keep at least 5 nautical miles away from the centre of any airport/helipad, or a built-up area
must keep at least 100 feet from any building, structure, vehicle, vessel or animal not associated with the operation and at least 100 feet from any people
cannot fly over an open-air assembly of people
must be clear of cloud with not less than 2 statute miles ground visibility

Those seems like the commercial rules not recreational I had posted above:http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/civilaviatio...d=hruzf#safety
9 km from the airport covers a very large area though. Are the bowness/downtown landing pads considered heliports?

FPV does not always mean loss of line of sight. If the UAV FPV can see the operator from its vantage point, the operator is still within line-of-sight.

AFAIK there is no difference between recreational and commercial it's strictly based on weight when it comes to the regulations. Transport Canada's rules apply in either case.

Heliports in Calgary include the following:
    Rockyview Hospital
    Former Children's Hospital
    Calgary Children's Hospital
    Foothills Hospital
    Calgary City/Bow River Heliport
    Bowness Heliport
    Peter Lougheed Heliport
    South Health Campus Heliport

    See url for locations:
    https://skyvector.com/airports/Canada/Alberta

So if you take a map and draw 9km circles around all these locations... That more than covers the whole city.

FPV is for all intents and purposes banned as per regulations don't argue the line of sight point with me I don't make the rules.

So in short yes it's still pretty much illegal to fly drones within Calgary no matter what anyone else might tell you.

I never fly in parks, only grassy areas or areas that are being developed, and I steer clear of the air port. People don't realize the liability of the drone.

I use the drone as an excuse to get out of the city and find new spots to get an aerial view.

Yeah I really have zero interested in flying in populated areas and around hospitals or airports. Sure I might do some test flights in the massive park by my house but I keep it low and make damn sure the failsafes are functionAL before hand.

Nothing, unless the operator was breaching civil or air regs for the area (eg flying close to an aerodrome).

If repeat, then the story could change.

Not much. The 150m from people and things is more of a suggestion than law.

602.41 and 602.45 are pretty vague.

You have to trespass private property or smack someone or fly near aerodrome before you will get legally charged.

I would expect similar repercussions to some creep following and filming kids in a van from their bus stop to their homes.

Trust me if someone gets caught and brought in to the station over this they are not going to have a fun time.

A very useful NavCanada web site for any RC aircraft/drone/rocketry owners/operators - their interactive restricted airspace stuff mashed with Google Maps, link. Not much of Calgary is a go but there are spots in all four quadrants where you wouldn't be in violation of NavCanada's rules, the CoC might be the next concern though plus NavCanada does warn of built-up Areas which they call "houses, dwellings, etc" which have to be at least 4.5km away from where you're flying - that in itself would dismiss all of what's left in Calgary. WNW of Airdrie would be the nearest 'safe' and probably legal area to go fly in.
