Default verizon now offers 500/500 fibre internet

    Great for 8 devices $264 USD/month
    http://www.verizon.com/home/fios-fastest-internet/

this is targeted for home use. I can imagine 5 kids + 2 adults but 500? maybe each person at home as a http server or what type of home would need 500 up/down ?

will we ever see 100 upload in Canada? Or will that be limited to LTE for consumers?

    Imagine 1997 CADVision
    1 gigabit/second (combined) = 19173.96114286 modem (56k)

basically the bandwidth of 20,000 dial up users

Yet in Japan....since 2009, my inlaws had gigabit both directions, for like 4000 yen...~$45...In the middle of nowhere with rice fields all around...and a single track train

So offer up what could be done to change things in Canada. Obviously it's not that big a deal because we are in the midst of a federal election and I do not recall better ISP speeds being an issue that any party is campaigning on. My TELUS Internet 50 seems more than adequate for my needs at the moment and foreseeable future.
    Will fuck off, again.

Stop making me cry. As a home business its ludicrous how much companies charge. I have Shaw 60 ATM and I am lucky to see 20 in the evening. My neighborhood is crazy saturated and Telus best offering is 10...

    FYI.
Canada dropped from #16(2013) to #20 (2014) on the Akamai ranking. I bet we are #30 for 2015

Nice. But people aren't really supposed to be downloading HD movies so much as legally streaming them.

I'm humming along on 5mbit Teksavvy $24.95 CAD/month. Runs fine for HD Netflix and automated 2AM to 8AM for downloads.

At the end of the year a $1,000 difference can buy a hell of a videocard (And I do intend to be the first to buy a 16nm videocard with 32GB of memory)

Its sort of like google fiber, for the first few months people use it like crazy, and then they settle into a 10mbit line pretty easily.

TELUS got the infrastructure but not wide spread enough. Shaw based on DOSIS and you will never get that kind of upload.

So I guess there's no incentive.

my in laws have the telus 100/20
    its great service

just a pain when trying to set up remote acces for them for their router/home security..

depending on their dynamic ip address pool, which ever subnet net is pooled from telus DHCP
    these ports are randomly blocked

    pptp 1723 vpn
8080 for remote access to router or webcam interface
80 standard port for standalone http devices, TELUS aid this is due toe the Microsoft Windows 2000 Internet Information Exploit. (yes some
things don't need to be publically open on WAN side
    443 sometimes
    3389 default remote desktop

Cable modems still have plenty of bandwidth to go, there is plenty of bandwidth in coaxial cable that is unused. There will be even more if someday they get rid of the analog channels.

    http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/A...1-Modem-135352

SURFboard® SB8200 Cable Modem should probably be able to do 5 Gbits down 2 Gbits up. It really totally depends on what the cable provider can link to the greater internet with, and how much they think that the consumer will pay for it.

Packet loss will be higher than fiber, but I really don't think that there is a real physical problem with how much data that can be piped through a properly shielded coax.

I probably mentioned this before, but I have been with Telus DSL and fiber at both my place and my parents, and RDP on 3389 has never ever been an issue. Even if it were, just change to a different port and specify the port via : at the end of the address.

BTW: Assuming in a couple years, Shaw will be moving to 1 to 10 Gbps cable modems (Docsis 3.1) at reasonable pricing.

Anything you download now, could probably be downloaded in a couple years at at least 10x the speed. Just in case anyone is amassing a collection. If you are just starting a cable connection, it might be worth renting the Docsis 3.0 modem - and then buying the 3.1 later if they let you.

I can picture shaw in the year 2022

"yes you have the SB8200, we can offer 5 upload and 100 down, the modem supports up to 2gigabit upload"

"SB8200 ultra-fast DOCSIS 3.1 modem delivers unprecedented data rates of more than 5 Gbps downstream and 2 Gbps upstream. Switchable filters with full 204MHz upstream and 1218MHz downstream support reliable gigabit performance, while reducing interference in the home network.

    On a side note:

    http://consumerist.com/2015/10/19/go...cable-company/

I think the fiber players know that Docsis 3.1 is coming, they have to sign as many people as then can before the next leap to gigabit on coax (which pretty much places the speed restrictions on the computers networking card)

    But never expected flowers.

So Shaw released the 4th quarter report.

    Cable (video) subscribers down 33,832
    Internet subscribers up 265

    And somehow profits are up!

cant wait for these vampires to die.

If you want good deals from Shaw. Keep your cable TV.

They are so desperate to keep those numbers from falling they are cutting their throat on all of their services.

I was paying $100+ for basic cable and Internet was was planning on cutting the basic cable to pay $70 for just Internet. When I told them I wanted to kill my cable service they offered me Internet 30 + basic cable for $50/month for 6 months.

I plan on "cancelling" my cable TV service a couple of month after the 6 month promo price ends.

I should probably time it just before the end of the fiscal quarter.

I heard that in April, you will be able to buy individual channels only - is this true?

If so, I feel like the only way that model will work is if it's like $0.99/channel. It will allow people to get sports and discovery channels, or the odd ball channels. Everything else people will still just download (HBO, AMC, primetime sitcoms, etc.)
