Seems like a big ass waste of money. Nobody is going to veer out of the way on that road to bypass Hwy1. If I'm a trucker, why the heck would I dart off on a mountain road earlier than I need to and slow myself down, just to bypass a big easy stretch of Hwy2? Especially now that Stoney Trail is open and makes getting through Calgary a breeze.

If the feds took the money they are spending on the kicking horse canyon and poured it into this project I'll bet it would look more attractive. Would be really nice to have an alternate to that route so nearby. I'll bet heavy truck traffic would prefer a Calgary - Howse - Revelstoke route.

Ask @gwill what he thinks, because native consultations will be massive for this. .

I can’t wait until the rest of this country sees the mess these precedents are creating for accomplishing anything.

No, we need to ask natives in Ontario what they think.

Possible fuel savings. By that I don't mean a one off detour. If truckers are using that route all the time, then the fuel savings could add up.

One of the biggest costs of those owning their own rigs the cost of fuel.
Less fuel costs, less transportation costs, cheaper costs of goods etc

But as you pointed out, the easy stretch of highway 2 might counter any effort to go up the mountain.

Consultations are a joke at the moment. Look at the teck mine that's had approval from all first nations. A month before the final announcement on possible approval you have a FN group demanding more money. It's even worst in bc where a small group gets all the press for the pipeline out there.

To make matters worst the way our govts back certain projects are just as big of the problem.

Why do business in canada like this? I agree with killramos the precedence being set as of late makes it impossible to do much.

Couldn't see heavy traffic from Calgary using the Howse. But I could see them using it if they are coming from Edmonton and especially from Red Deer. Simply bypassing the train wreck that is Hwy 1 SE of Golden has me sold on it. Plus it's a more direct route for me.

Just to avoid any confusion, BC is closing #1 Hwy this summer from Golden thru the Kicking Horse Pass (twisty road east of town). Traffic will be rerouted thru Radium during major portions of construction.

How about all 'you people' just wait a year for this thing to get done, then hold another poll.

There will be NO CLOSURE during the summer.

Closures will be lifted during the busiest summer traffic season

You're correct; 24hr closures of the highway are not permitted during the summer. Are you a gambling man?

Is this more of a backup route in case of avalanche/loose rocks takes out #1?

Well, my summer vacation plans have me passing through there, so I guess I am.

Since moving to Edmonton, I avoid QE2 and highway 1 from Calgary to Golden whenever possible. So I would welcome another route. I have driven before on 11 to 93 and it is such a nice drive.

That said I highly doubt this will ever happen. QE2 needed to be 3 full lanes north and south 20 years ago and it probably still won't be like that in another 20 years when it should be 4 lanes each way.

I am all for the toll road idea though if it helps speed things up.

Make Kicking Horse Canyon a toll road, AND Howse pass as well. Awesome.

You can bet something geological there will be fucked, and a side of a mountain will come down. There is a lot of sandstone in that area.
