I can see both sides here. That land is too valueable to have a trailer park on it, period. But the way it's been handled seems pretty heartless (at least the way you've described it). You're right an elderly person won't have anywhere to go and to simply say "too bad, business is business, read your contract" is pretty shitty.

Mar, have the residents talked to airdrie or strathmore about land?

If the city covered moving costs I would think that would be fair and work out a deal with a neighbouring town to help cover the cost of utility setup. Of course the residents that wanted to move would have to pitch in too (call it a "special assessment").

Inner city, low density, low income area.

City have given 3 years notice, of land use, lease expiry.

City has offered generous sums to relocate the trailers + costs.

    Whats the issue again?

Same thing happened in Cochrane a few years back. Someone set up a fund and the Developer chipped in $100K out of the $300k+ raised for further assistance.

Also this shit could happen even to those in the upper middle class. Redwood Meadows for example.

They don't own the land plain and simple. Did these people really think they could just live forever on someone else's property? They were given 3 whole years to figure their shit out...stop complaining and move on.

Hmm. Yea not sure I side with you OP.

Trailer park has to go. No question its an under utilization of the land. Low income condos seems like a much better development.

    Another fucking Mar thread...

$20K is more than enough to either drag your trailer elsewhere, or pay rent on a nice place for a year or two until you figure your shit out.

The biggest thing you dont understand is that they dont own the land. It's leased. 3 year is more than enough notice to find another park to move to. Not to mentioned it's all paid for.

That's the thing though...There isn't another park to move to.

I thought the city promised to build one in a different area but then backed out.

I understand the whole leased land thing and the three years notice but if there isn't anywhere to move to what do you do.

The city is essentially saying FU to the residents.

They will flip the land to a developer and profit...

Many years ago a similar thing happened to the Dalhousie trailer park, now Dalhousie station. My Grandparents had moved there in about 1990 after selling their Acreage out by Cochrane (yes not all tenants of trailer parks are poor, plenty of old folks just wanting to downsize) It was a pretty old park by then and had plenty of ancient trailers. They had a moving allowance to relocate to Arbour lake, my Grandparents trailer was still fairly new and made the move easily. However, many trailers were so old and rickety that they simply could not be moved. Their next door neighbor was a kind, sweet little old lady, probably in her mid 70's at that time. Her trailer was one of the non movables, she was so stressed and upset about the whole thing (she was there since the 70's) My Grandpa ended up buying another unit in the park just for her to live in, She passed in 2005 and our family simply sold the unit afterwards (my Grandparents are both gone as well) This old lady had no family outside of the people she lived near.

Stuff like this that happens to the elderly upset me. Some are very attached to their way of life and upsets them to consider moving to a home or different living arrangements. I do feel sorry for some there that really don't know what they are going to do in the future.

They were rush, rush, rush. Kick everyone out, then it sat vacant for 5 years littered with junk smack dab in the middle of town.

Currently there are over 2 suicides in Alberta EVERY SINGLE DAY. How many have you read about?

Pretty much what happened to race city, but with people. Interesting how different the reactions are.

It's business. Just like Race City was.

An aside note, Mar, you need to call the police if you know seniors who are planning to commit suicide over this.

I was curious about this statement and took a look at alternatives in Calgary. There are 7 or 8 Mobile home parks in Calgary and I found 8 trailers for sale under $50k with the cheapest at $19,900......

Let's be real here. It's not they don't have a place to go. They know they are sitting on a gold mine and a potential PR nightmare and wants more.

2017 will be here soon enough and there will be a few that won't leave causing a scene. Mark my word.
