Default BEST Place to build a 1 Million Dollar Home in Calgary

    A little back story:

We have had 2 homes in Mahogany and have enjoyed the community and now are currently looking into building another. The only issue with this is that the community has a slight inflation compared to other communities and the surrounding suburbs.

The lot we have choosen is $415,000 for 9000 sq ft - to me that is ridiculous....but it is a lot we love. On top of that the house base price is $540,000 with a basic interior. The builder we have choosen is Calbridge and they seem to be basing their interior finishes off of a $300,000 house which in turn you have may levels to upgrade that off of.

MY QUESTION IS: other than Mahogany where would 1 Million dollars build a nice 3000-4000 sq ft house with a decent lot and a triple garage.

If you really like the neighbourhood that would be a big reason to try to make it work there. Slightly smaller house or something.
Could move to Cranston or something

You're going to have to look out of town for that. Regardless of the dollar amount, a 3-4000sq.ft two story means a 2000sq.ft base, plus another 800sq.ft for a triple garage, PLUS a decent sized yard? Those are far and few between.

Is it just me or is 4000 square feet a massive house? Am I depriving my family by forcing four people to squash into only 1800 plus basement?

4000 is massive. My parents have a 4000 sq ft house and it can comfortably house my family (four of us) when I visit along with my parents, my brother, and my sister and her husband.

I moved from mahogany to artesia. The only thing we miss is our neighbours. Artesia is significantly nicer than Mahogany less amenities but a short drive.

Virtually every lot backs onto a pond or environmental reserve. The reserve homes have awesome views of the river valley. Waking up to fog rolling through the valley was pretty cool.

Houses start at the $1m plus range and can go a far bit higher.

The owners keep their lawns in top shape. Minimum 6 mature trees, under ground sprinklers, tons of rock gardens and water features. That was important to us.

Long term for living in, or 5yr investment?

4k sqft above ground is ridiculous... lillydale is closing in two years... buying a couple lots side by side in Ramsey would be a good return, but probably looking at 2k sqft abv grnd

Sorry guys! I've been in BC for awhile and that is how they spec houses.

The house is 3200 + 1100 for the basement.

This is will a "forever" home, meaning we will keep it probably till the kids are older or until we move somewhere smaller / or an acreage.

Cranston Riverstone has some crazy large estate lots backing onto the river or escarpment in that size and price range.

Artesia is really nice but will be more pricey than Mahogany or Riverstone.

Not a lake community but we recently purchased in Shawnee Park. 850k for 2600 sq ft above ground. They have quite a few larger floorplans. Also one thing Shawnee Park cannot accommodate that Mahogany can is walk out basements. However I really like having a new home that is not further than Sundance, along with that the community itself os shaping up to be something pretty nice and unique

I would like to live in Artesia but it feels so far away!

Cranston is not letting any new builds happen in there anymore unless you go down by the river.

I would hate to be that far south. Doesn't even feel like you are in Calgary any more.

If it was me I would be in Springbank. All the land you want and half the drive time to city center.

Thing is the weather is better down there. Way less chance of hail and less chance of precipitation in general during the summer.

Lots of trashy white people though.

Yes, there a pockets of white trash - it's just knowing where and when to go out.

I also agree with the weather - it was a dream when we lived down there. We got hail once and it lasted 30 seconds.

It takes 15-30 minutes to get anywhere ( nearly ) in the city. When I worked downtown at the Suncor building it was 22 minutes from my door to my desk.

Correct, just Cranston Riverstone (down by the river).

Now if you’re worried about flooding they are building homes up against the escarpment, which are much higher up then anything against the river.

Mahogany is right on Deerfoot and Stony so while you do rack up the clicks like crazy, time wise you can get anywhere besides the deep NW pretty quick.

It's nice having two fast highways to choose from without having to add extra commuting to get to either one.

When I lived in Somerset, it took me longer to get to Deerfoot than actually commuting down deerfoot to 32nd.
