Besides that i was reffering to more federal dollars to the city and the fact the 88 olympics made a big profit.
A lot has changed in 30 years, including the insane "upmanship" by cities hosting, that is essentially the spirit of the olympics.
One can manipulate numbers any way they wish but when it is all said and done, those 1988 Olympics were most likely a money loser as well - it's just all too convenient to not include ancillary costs incurred to aid the hosting of those games. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Will fuck off, again.
or have numbers that show a profit, and then claim they were manipulated. that seems easier. Ii i dont know, but everything i read says they made money directly, not to mention the trickle down effect. The same one you use as argument for th eoil industry. they do good, everyone else does good, reasstaruants bars, theatre, malls, fast food that wasnt even counted in the profit. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Not that it matters, i would love to live in a city and see the olympics as i will probably never travel somewhere to see them. Could be once in a lifetime.
Exactly my thought. If it means we get $5-$6B fed money out of this and about $1-2B provincial, it's not a bad haul for the city. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Can they pay 2/3 of the Flames new barn? Fuck yeah, I'm on board now.

I guess it’s time to start becoming an expert on obscure winter sports. 8 years should do it.

The olympics aren’t going to save the flames. A free new arena with the same financial arrangement as the Saddledome would be a short term fix for escalating costs (assuming it’s even built to maximize premium revenue). The reason why Flames are so hard up on CalgaryNext is the additional revenue brought in from ancillary developments at the site, not just potential arena revenues. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Well the NDP hikes alone without the olympics have me paying enough extra taxes to cover a C63 lease, I’d say it’s not exactly the same. God knows what it’d be like after the olympics for high income earners to “pitch in a little more”.This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

I think the real kicker would be for a stadium. There’s recent precedent for provinces and the feds to kick in money for those when needed (i.e the PanAm games). If the Flames get an answer for that it might make the arena deal easier to accept. If there were an opportunity for the Flames to get their Katz-like real estate deal they covet so much it would probably be more likely up by McMahon since Victoria Park is taken for that. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. But that’s pure speculation.

Feds pay the creosote cleanup. Calgary next is maybe feasible and it's a huge benefit to the city to put that behind us. Basically need to start tomorrow though.

Even with the feds paying for creosote cleanup Next isn’t viable. Even the feds paying for the cleanup and all the road adjustment costs it isn’t viable. It was that comically bad a proposal. Thank goodness even the Flames have accepted its death. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
