Default Can't get oil filter off. Next step?

Well, this is new. I've done oil changes on trucks, cars, tractors, motorcycles.... always quick and painless.

Today, I decided to quickly change the oil in my Victory and get it ready for the season. It has turned into a complete and total fiasco the likes of which I have never seen. Couldn't get the drain bolt out... couldn't get it to move at all. Quickly stripped that piece of shit so she's stuck in there until I can get someone to extract it. Decided to drain what I could from the filter side of things. Started out with the standard OEM supplied cap wrench, all it did was spin. Grabbed a sheet of sandpaper to help apply more friction, the cap wrench still spun. I had another cap wrench that I got from a Honda oil change kit, tried that and same thing... just spun. At this point, I looked more closely at the filter and it appears it may be damaged from last season. Decided to wrap the filter in sandpaper and try my strap oil filter wrenches. On the first go, I had solid friction between the filter and strap wrench. I was twisting on it pretty good and the strap broke. Grabbed my bigger strap wrench, again solid friction between the two and the filter just collapsed on itself.

At this point, I'm pretty pissed off so I grab a screwdriver/hammer and punch it thru, begin to turn, oil draining out and it just starts tearing thru everything. Filter hasn't budged.

Whats the next step here? Metal cutters and start cutting this fucking thing off???

It’s still not budging even AFTER the screwdriver trick? Holy shit!

Try some giant ass channel locks. Those always work for me. Use them to crush the filter and bite into it, then gronch on it.

Yah the shaft of the screwdriver just tore thru it like paper when I twisted on it. As the trainer at one of my old jobs used to say.... "It's just fucked."

Really sucks because the bike is out of commission until I at least get this filter off and the new one on.

My experience with fucked oil filters is that the screwdriver trick hurts more than it helps. The casings are so weak and it just tears itself to shreds.

I like the vice-grip chain wrench, but you may be too far gone. Have you considered burning down yiur garage with that vehicle left inside?

You can try to save it with pair of channel locks

    I had not considered that.

Yah I'll try the vice grip chain tomorrow.

The chain wrench can be made insanely tight if you are patient. Make it as tight as possible, then take it off and tighten it up a teeny bit, rinse, repeat.

It's kind of the geometric opposite, but same theory as, the way a gentleman gives a 19 year old anal. Patience and care is key.

Channel locks work well. Crush the filter half flat and twist the bitch off. A very satisfying 4 seconds.

you'd never get anywhere near the threads... and if threads that are soaked in oil are seized.... you have bigger problems.

It's not the size that matters, it's the taste it leaves in your mouth.

Wrap a leather belt around it, and pull, lots of leverage. Fat man belts work best, even more leverage. Just did it this past weekend.

I have a 79 GMC boogie van. In the mid eighties, I put on a set of Blackjack headers as the van weighs a shit ton and I wanted more pep. Long story short, one of the header tubes gets awfully close to the oil filter, and it pretty much melted the rubber seal of the filter to the block. Spent many hours over three days squeezing the hell out of the filter until I finally ripped the canister completely off the metal base. At that point, I just poked two screwdrivers into the holes of the metal baseplate and used a pry bar to twist it off. It worked! Scraped off what remained of the rubber oil ring and it was good to go. Not long after I switched back to the stock exhaust manifolds and never had this problem happen again. Hopefully you can get yours off without ripping it the canister completely off. Good luck.

The last time this happened to me, I just tightened the crap out of a c-clamp until it was pressing hard, but not breaking into the filter and then you can get a great grip to spin off.

I see all the damage is on the outer end. Can't you get a strap/chain wrench closer to the base where there's more rigidity?
