There really needs to be a politician every couple decades to really come in and clean house. The bloat and waste that accumulates is ridiculous.

Well yeah, easy to do that when the whole city is a landfillThis quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Well you still be able to in Calgary but it'll cost you $3 per bag and that $3 gets you a tag for that bag. City is now suggesting that neighbors share their black bin space to avoid excess garbage bag fees. The CoC is also now talking about utilizing the black bin's RFID tag to track how often a household's black bin gets emptied and setting up a fee schedule to reflect that. And further to all of this, the CoC is going to expand it's bin snooping program to cover 200,000 households annually and will farm this out to a third party. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Man, times have certainly changed compared the 70's when our family used to burn everything in an old 45 gallon drum in the back yard (small prairie town).
Will fuck off, again.
I am supportive of this actually. Bill me per kg used.
And get rid of the rest of the fees on my utilities in exchange.

It's a good idea. I might start to do it.This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
your bill will likely end up being stupid per kg, and after they pay a 3rd party to build, develop and rollout this system your taxes will go up to keep up on all of the scope creep.
Theres 0 chance your utility fees go down.
oh i agree don't worry, the idea is predicated upon the concept that the government can do anything competently.
I just generally prefer the concept of user fees to blanket taxes though.

Two tier black bins? How dare you! This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
I mean, a third tier where I neither pay taxes and get my garbage taken for free would work too. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

I also agree, but it's painful. They just waste the saved money paying hippies to give you shit for throwing pizza boxes out. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

And yet it returns of you push people around enough. My friend recently moved to an acreage. Now burns+50% of what should be recycled because they've made it horrible for him. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Why do I suspect that some high-garbage household will end up dumping their shit in other people's bins to avoid higher costs...
Ultracrepidarian
This already happens in small towns. I see people dumping garbage in people's bins thinking it's OK when the person with the bin is paying for the bin fees. People are assholes. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Totally will see this happen here too.
This already happens. My dad notices how full his bins are on collection day knowing full well he only has one or two bags in it when he takes it out the night before. We're all trying so hard to convince my parents to move outta the NE lolThis quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
As long as there's room for his garbage, then does it matter? This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
No, and as per above, the city encourages this. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
We are a family of 6 and often have my MIL staying with us (beats a nanny!)... My neighbour is a single retired lady that spends 80% of her time travelling and it was her suggestion to use her bins whenever we needed, so she now leaves them on the side of her house so we can access them when ever we need.
That being said, even as a household of 6/7, we very rarely fill our black bin even with the bi-weekly pick ups... It's much more common to run out of space in the blue bin, especially after a birthday (toy packaging is obscene!), even though I know ~70% of the blue bin will end up in the landfill anyways.
I believe they are encouraging this as part of the $3/bag program. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
If your neighbor got room, fill it.
The blue bin pisses me off. Why can't we leave larger pieces of cardboard flattened near it. If we get something big from ikea or a tv or something, having to shred the cardboard so it fits in the bin, and takes up the entire bin, is so frustrating. I swear some weeks our bin is full from a couple cardboard boxes and not even any of our other recyclables. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Yeah, sometimes after a few package deliveries, I need to stagger my cardboard recycling thanks to this.
