I remember paying $30 for 4 mb on my blackberry. Back then we had to sort out how many web pages a day we may be able to browse. Overages were $400 per mb.

I don’t need the data so much, it was more that the data came with jumping to the US-Canada plans which for the number of days I’m in the US in a year saves me a fair bit of money vs RLH

I ended up going with Public. If I roam in the US and charge my company 30 bucks for roaming its not my problem.

Maybe ill switch to freedom after a few more years as they build out

I don't really think the home vs away thing is still an issue like with Wind Mobile. All plans don't seem to care where you are. Possibly your speed is dropped? I don't go to the bedroom communities enough to really give a good review on the data speed.

Perceived value. For a while now data hasn't cost the provider anything extra to provide. You still have the grow the business so you goat the customer into thinking they are getting more of something for an incremental increase in cost. You cannot offer discounts on data to keep customers but you can certainly keep them by giving them something that costs nothing extra to provide for a few bucks more.

It's probably to pad stats as well. We often see updates of Canada having the most expensive rates in the world and $/gb comparisons. He isn't going to use 100gb so it costs them nothing to keep stacking more on top of large accounts. Same reason why the business shared lines are now insane data buckets as they know your family of 4 probably isn't going to use 500gb anyways.

Everywhere else, it's just 4G speed hiding behind a 5G logo.
