Downtown Calgary Officewear

I spend a reasonable amount of time in the +15, and can't help but notice a staggeringly large number of guys that wear a golf shirt (like actual moisture wicking athletic shirt, often in a bright color) with dress pants and some kind of worn out dress shoes.

Anyone wear this ridiculous combo to work? If so, why?

Dress pants is overkill for a lot of the software companies. Literally just show up comfy but don't look like you rolled out of bed after a one night stand at her place.

Engineers at my company now vary from suit no tie down to graphic T shirt with jeans (and this is not friday)

My personal limit is even on casual fridays to have a collar and buttons.

But yeah I'll often wear a golf-style shirt or athletic polo (ala Eddie Bauer) with kahki-style dress pants. Nothing colourful though, just grays and earth tones. Dress sneakers for footwear, never actual dress shoes.

It's a nice quasi-casual outfit that fits my office environment (engineering), comfortable and breathes well. Can go for a nice walk outside on a hot day, layers well in the winter, and doesn't wrinkle. Guys in my office wear everything from tie-less suits to t-shirts and jeans so I'm pretty much the middle ground.

I agree that golf shirts with loud colours or patterns are a bit much.

The wicking shirts are awful for the office because they stink if you sweat even a tiny bit throughout the day. Nobody cares what you look like, but they might care if they can smell you. If you're going to wear those at least have the courtesy to wear an undershirt with it or use some antiperspirant haha.

I usually wear Khakis, dress shoes and a golf shirt/polo almost every day unless I have external meetings. I haven't had to wear proper dress clothes for a while now and I love it. I am also way cooler in the summer months without lined wool pants and an undershirt + long sleeved dress shirt.

The look you describe though is the typical IT look haha - basically just one step above full casual. I couldn't possibly care less what other people wear to work, if you can get away with something cool & comfortable, good for you. I've worked at places where VP's wear silk screen T-shirts and ripped jeans on Fridays - it just doesn't matter for the most part in my experience, especially if you aren't meeting external clients.

Shit I'm wearing golf shirt and khakis today, and it's sort of colorful too. #triggered.

But really, I don't why most people think you need to wear boring colors to look "dressy". Whatever type of shirt you wear, have some darned confidence and unleash you inner peacock. I've paid close attention and I get the most compliments when I wear bright colored shirts, and new flash, PINK always impresses the ladies. No lie.

Right now I'm wearing sneakers, jeans, polo shirt and hoodie.

Yeah I'm not talking about casual vs formal. Makes perfect sense to dress appropriately for the setting you work in.

Also not talking about khakis and polo. Again, that's a normal thing.

I'm specifically talking about formal (i.e. dress slacks) from the waist down, and golf course from the waist up. Just doesn't make sense to me.

I wear a suit 4 days a week, and usually chinos/polo/blazer on fridays. If I could get away with wearing casual clothes to work, I would be all over it.

True golf shirt with jeans and commuter boots is my casual Friday go to.

Most days for me it’s long sleeve dress shirt, dress pants, with clean polished shoes.

The look you described is tempting just from a comfort standpoint... while I prefer the look of wearing more formal, it gets hot and exhausting.

That said, neon coloured golf shirt is definitely a no go for me. Save that shit for the course. And I always wear a collared shirt to the office out of principal.

What really gets me is that women seemingly just wear whatever the fuck the want to work on a day to day, compared to guys who have a pretty clearly laid out dress code. Even when I worked in more formal environments.

Except my shoes are definitely not worn out.

Its a comfort thing more than anything, I'm a naturally very warm person and a long sleeve dress shirt in the summer is no bueno.

That said, I don't wear golf shirts in the winter.

IT guy here and yes this is exactly how I dress lol, minus the flashy colors for me. We can do a lot of running around so the shirts keep cool better. Also my shoes I get dress ones with better soles and not flat cause it's better for the amount of walking/running we do. Our office is all casual now and there are lots of guys wearing jeans and runners or walking/hiking shoes so I think I look fine and seen much worse.

Some days I think the best part about working in construction is that nobody cares about how you dress and you usually make a lot more than the guys downtown in suits.

i hate having to wear a dress shirt... IMO as long as you're clean and reasonable, beyond that judging someone on their clothing is just stupid... who wasted the most money on an item that has the same function?.... who cares...

Sounding awfully salty Craig , you described what I wear working at an EPC when I was downtown. I rotate between jeans/dress pants on the feel. usually have a dress shoe on. Golf polos are an abundance in my closet and its all about comfort. I wore the odd dress shirt, typically if I had a client meeting.

You have comfort envy and triggered by a polo that you aren't at Pinebrook going on

I just wear jeans, tshirt/polo and sneakers......I dress up if I have a meeting though. Comfy all day.
