Next would be to focus on educating our next generations to be future business and entrepreneurial leaders. Re-training current unemployed workers (maybe not fucking over students in student loans/tuition hikes/cutting education credits) so we can grow some more sectors outside of oil/gas or government. Problem is none of these parties care to plan anything for long term and only seem to care on their 4 year term.
Meanwhile, the UCP cut most program funding that was in place.

Most of the programs through alberta innovates, atb, and community futures are on hold, not accepting new clients, under review or have ceased to exist. I was just going through this with a bunch of guys at the startup group i'm in - fundings gone / dried up / non-existant.

Alberta works isn't funding anything for retraining unless you're over 50, or want to be a nurse / social worker...

I don't particularly like Rick Bell or the Sun but they seem to have summarized the CBE's actions pretty well here:

    Good read actually.

What I don't like is that everyone says "The CBE". The board is just made up of a bunch of people.

Who are they? Why don't we refer to them by name instead of "The CBE".

    I want names, people.

Writing professionally is a really difficult gig, and I'm not going to belittle anyone who has turned that into a career, but man is Rick ever hard to read! Decent summary anyway.

It's truly the same game most government employees play across sectors. If there are budget cuts you make sure it's done in areas that the public feels the most, then wait for the money to flow because the politicians don't always want an open fight about it.

It usually helps if the public is on your side, views you as the little guy. I think the CBE has miscalculated that the public would be on their side, or that this would be about the teachers. May have worked 4 years ago, don't think the public likes it now.

I'm on the opinion that they should not be building K-4 and 5-9 schools as that doubles maintenance and administration costs compared to K-9 that Catholics build.
Wasn't surprising that where they found the money to keep the teachers.

    To answer my question above:

The CFO of the CBE is a dude named Brad Grundy.

Brad's an interesting cat. He's from the BC public sector. I'll call that strike one.

Second, as far back as his linkedin shows, he's only ever been a public employee. He's never had actual responsibility for shareholder value. Strike two.

Brad Grundy also has a cute "dollars and sense" chat on the website:

So what are the expectations of a Trustee? I mean we vote for them every few years but what kind of teeth do they actually have?

I want a Farkas style guy as a trustee in there to mix things up.

Also didn't know that one of the trustees is our friend Kent Hehr's daddy Dick Hehr. It's all coming together now.

These people and Mr. BC Gov't Brad, are running my kids education.

    Fuck these people.

Read my trustees bio, her CV is essentially “Social Justice Warrior”.

I think we have identified some low hanging fruit.

Why do these trustees even exist? It sounds like the negotiation here was between the management of the CBE and the provincial government.

Id be willing to bet this is NOT a meritocracy but rather discriminatory appointment by sex or political orientation.

It’s not an appointment. We elect these assholes.

    Sometimes they are even acclaimed.

How many people actually locally run for a Trustee position? In most other locations I see these largely as acclaimed positions. If there is a vote the people running have no publicity so you really just check a random box, if you check one at all.

I try to vote based on hotness. Unfortunately last election I had a choice between Hurdman and a dude named Cumming.
