Victoria, Vancouver, those are just previews of what will happen to the rest of Canada when you make drug supply free and "safe". Since those two cities have addiction, crime and homelessness figured out, we should be sending everyone to BC for treatment and rehab.

I drove my kids through E Hastings last Sunday as a stark warning of the peril of using drugs. Not sure it hit home with them as we then went to Capilano and spent $200 to cross a bridge.

E Hastings is way worse than I recall. Completely taken over with plenty of people walking around bent 90 degrees at the waist.
It's amazing, eh!? They've had to lower the speed limit to 30kph because the zombies so often wander into the street. Plus, you often have to walk on the street to get around the tents on the sidewalks.

While E-Slow is correct that it's always been shitty, it's now on a

Last summer when I was back. You'd think you'd be proud to show your wife your hometown but instead I was embarrassed.

She wanted to see the Central Public Library... but didn't go because of all the drunks, druggies, and homeless hanging out in front of it. I saw more than a few zombies on Stephen Ave myself, and groups of people openly smoking who knows what out of foil near LRT stations. Strange to feel uncomfortable as a 200 pound guy in a city you grew up in but that's how I felt every time I passed an alleyway with some meth head in a hoodie.

We flew to Victoria for a week and it seemed every park was full of tent encampments. We walked from the airport to catch the bus into town (it's actually a nice walk) and the first person we encountered on the walking path was a guy bent over with his forehead on a sign frozen in place - I'd assume from Fentanyl. Weirdest isht I've ever seen.

I've seen poverty in the 115 countries I've traveled to, but never the drug addiction and tent cities like I see in Canada and the US. And I'm exploring the densely populated urban parts - not hiding in my "gated" community like it seems some of you do.
The Salvation Army is right next door to the Library which is why there's so many sketch people around there. The area east of the library is even worse since there's more hidey holes that way.

Yea, and I've seen dodgy people around the food kitchens in Europe but it's a very different kind of dodgy...

Fentanyl and Meth and other synthetic drugs have really f'd up Canada and the US.

Stop sending firefighters to medical calls completely, would save the city an awful lot of money for something that is supposed to be a provincial responsibility and for which the city doesn't receive funding.

East Hastings has been a druged-out shitthole for 50 years, but you now see this kind of shit even in places that were "nice" in 2015.
I’ve made an effort to walk E Hastings pretty regularly since the 90’s. People call it a shit hole but it’s not that bad. Well, it wasn’t that bad. Last year was the first time I had to turn around because it’s that fucked up now. There’s sections of sidewalk that’s completely blocked out from any sunlight. Essentially a murder tunnel. It’s nuts.

Edit - apparently they cleaned it up a bit literally the day I left: https://vancouversun.com/news/local-...ampment-update

I’m back again shortly, will attempt the walk to Chinatown again thru there.

I'm not sure what that's supposed to mean, but seeing addicts here passed out while still standing up is creepy as fuck.

Yea I was pretty mad about that extra unit they bought that’s only purpose is driving around reversing OD’s. 0 fight fighting use whatsoever.

Why are we spending money on that shit.

Around half of all calls CFD responds to are medical in nature, and that, in theory, is a provincial responsibility.

CFD budget could be much lower without those.

Buddy with CFD speculates his hall responds 80% to overdoses.
In fact they have "regulars" that call 911 and purposely overdose.
The "medical unit" has been defunded so they end up taking a full fire unit for each drug related call out.

By “defunded” do you mean they bought another one 2 weeks ago?

You know what is the biggest flaw across every level of our government? A bizarre obsession with things that aren’t their jurisdiction/responsibility while simultaneously ignoring and doing a shit job with all of the items they are actually responsible for.

End result? No one does anything. No one is accountable for anything.

And the government bloat industrial complex increases endlessly despite ever dwindling quality of government service.

    Maybe?
I know his hall had three medical response units, but all were removed and they are back to taking a full engine to their medicals.

110% agreed with the accountability statement. That's just society in a nutshell though.

Doubtful they've been defunded, very likely they've been deployed for actual medical emergencies.

CFD has been first responder for years now. I was sick with something, called 911 for an ambulance, got a firefighter instead.

The number of days in a week that the fire alarm gets pulled in my building because of the retail area below is crazy. Every other day, before 7am... Goes off.

Regular people getting abused and having to walk through a drug use area is craziness. Downtown was never like this when I was a teen.

I do think China is purposeful in exporting drugs to North America. Look up what the Brit's did to China a long time ago. Ruined China for decades.
