The thing is apples haven’t gone up 25% because of a carbon tax; they have gone up because of corporate greed. It’s like the fuel tax at this point, even when AB scrapped it we conveniently saw the savings was not passed on anyways.
You can't think it's all corporate greed. If producers have increased costs, transportation cost have increased, wholesale operating costs increase... where is all the corporate greed....also, I think it's nearly impossible to calculate all the secondary cost increases....to many to count.

My problem with taxes is it allows a ton of people to so absolutely nothing in this country.
I'm sure a fraction are operating on the underground economy but still...
I've seen an incredible number of Reddit posts about people who were Canadian PRs for 10 years and never paid taxes and don't know what to do to fix it.

Like how TF is the bureaucratic system / CRA so broken that we welcome ten million immigrants in the last couple of decades but don't bother to check that they ever paid their taxes?

As someone who has moved to several other countries I've realized how big of a pain in the arse it is to learn the system. I do so, however, because I was raised with that Canadian mentality of doing it. Imagine people from countries who have never had to file taxes or worked under the table for years... do you think they're going to put in the hours and pay tax lawyers to figure it out or just do what they've always done?

Trudeau said yesterday there will be absolutely no other carve outs for other fuels from the carbon tax.

They should implement a grocery card whereby if you earn or have file net family income of 100k or less in the previous tax year (maybe 50k, not sure where the poverty thresholds are), you then whip out your card (it also needs your photo on it) and save instantly 25% off your checkout price. The gov will figure out how to compensate the difference, this has to be real change real effect, immediately. Maybe they can do this with rent as well. The key has always been the low income earners, how in the world are min wage worker able to survive with 1700.00/average monthly rent?

ive always found it disturbing that the gov (or like most gov of the world) using covid as an excuse to spend in the name of saving the economy. Then later had to raise taxes getting everyone to suffer along to curb their consequence and now doesnt want to bail everyone out. It was really a long term pain for short term gain reacting to a moment. Poor decision. My fear is that like the 70s, this inflationary/stagnation period may last a few decades.

    Great idea comrade.
The idea that other members of society should supplement the rest has been tried somewhere at some time... But I can't put a finger on it.

Trudeau needs to stop spending money, lift the BS carbon tax (which the bank of Canada admitted is increasing inflation) and best yet, stop sending money overseas.

unfortunately this is the way for all government/politicians. after all if money can solve the problem, it isnt a problem. The consolation is to hope they put the money towards a worthy cause. Or at least some of it.

If someone uses the term "corporate greed" in a manner that is not ironic, I immediately relegate them to idiot status. And probably poor.

Of course they are being greedy. That's their fucking job. Your job is to wash the urinals at the local middle school and then decide whether you are buying the apples with the money you were just paid or you are not buying the apples with the money you were just paid.

And hopefully stfu, while you're at it

You’d rather be the victim than enact better policy for people. I get it. People love it when they can be the victim so they’d rather the Feds tax them than the province. Dress it up all you want, that’s the choice you’re preferring.
    Principles are a bitch sometimes...

Haha that's what I was thinking. Businesses exist to make money, it's really very simple. Yet somehow, so many people don't understand that.
