Adding to what happened to the nut, here’s a comparison photo.

Crazy how much wear is on those things. Pretty much a single race use item.
So it wasn't cross threaded? Crazy.

And if they hammer it with the gun once and its not seated does it strip the lug nut with one shot? Or did he fuck it up multiple times causing it to be completely stripped?

WAsnt it cross threaded on, and getting it off was the problem?

Nope. That was just speculation. Mercedes confirmed it was the gun that rounded the nut.

So it was indeed user error. Did Toto fire the mechanic who ran the gun wrong? lol.
It is not a mechanic error. He is one of the best in the Merc Pit Crew, it is kind of Driver error. I am glad that the Mechanic doesn't become the scapegoat in this case,

Hmmmm interesting. Kind of silly but I'm not an F1 mechanic by any means.

There's a no blame culture at Mercedes, unless your name is Bottas.

Also, the politics and games is the best part about F1 when races are boring. I love it when TP's mix it up and sue (threaten) each other.

Unbelievable that Ferrari didn't closely inspect the entire car given what was on the line...
No shit! "Don't worry guys, the gearbox looks fine. We figured it'd be best to just gamble and not look at anything attached to the gearbox."

Like how does such an experienced race pedigree manage to fuck up these simple things so frequently? They were so worried about the gearbox because it would cost them grid places, but the parts that didn't matter to the grid that were cheap fixes they didn't bother with.

In any sense, fuck Ferrari. I've cheered for them because I was a fan of Seb, and I can't cheer for Mercedes because I hate Hamilton. With Seb gone, and RB being the only contention for Merc, I'm full on the RB band wagon again this year. Amazing luck for RB that Bottas has had 2 DNF's now this year, giving them the edge in the Constructors race. And the luck of the draw on how qualifying went allowed Max to just edge out Ham in the Drivers championship. This might be just the boost in confidence RB needs to really drive it home the rest of the season. Sergio has had a few races under his belt to be comfortable in the RB car now, so as long as continues to bring in points, and Bottas has a couple more bad luck finishes, the contructors champ could likely be switching hands this year. But that drivers champ is going to be a nail biter to the end I feel.

Yeah that was still mechanic error or part failure. The lines to the gun aren't so tight that the guy running it can't get centered with the wheel if the car is off it's marks by a bit.

I'm surprised they never made an attempt to chisel the nut off instead. Maybe they realized they would have no chance of finishing in the points so it was a worthless endeavor. Or is there some obscure rule about not using alternative tools in the pit lane?

For real tho. Putting ANY blame on Bottas because he stopped 5 inches early/late is so mindbogglingly stupid, the pit crew aren't robots that can only function with sub-1" tolerances.

If the team had any kind of class they'd take responsibility as a collective team, publicly defend the people involved if needed, and keep the blame game behind closed doors. But nope. Clears up any question about where Bottas stands on that team.

The nut would just used for the race itself, pretty much once a part comes off the car it never goes back on… they would not be able to swap the nuts during the race

Practice and qualifying would use different nuts

Hell, I think Stroll does that all the time.

I watched the Mercedes debrief on YT and it sounds like it was more of an angle issue than stopping on the marker too soon or late. Either way, shitting to blame Bottas for something that happens all the time and other pit crews manage this better. Boggles my mind how much time Mercedes gives up in the pits for a team that has been so well funded.

I think if you literally have one single task to perform you should be the one adapting.

I never read it as Toto blaming Bottas or the mechanics, he was stating the sequence of events that has happened.

Anyway Seb had a phenomenal race finally and Hamilton isn't in first for once. Those are the important facts

My thought too. You can move to get it right.

Mercedes is all class lately. Lewis blaming the team in his post race interview. Toto blaming Bottas for an equipment failure. I hope that one specifically is just a sign of what is to come next year. Bottas out, Russel in.

Agreed. The others in the pit crew got their wheels off no problem. It seems Toto just doesn't like Bottas and making up excuses to possibly fill his seat for next year lol.
