Are you 'dialing' into to a corporate network and then testing the latency? (ie vpn)

It's not VPN. I believe after everything thats probably what I will need to do is get a VPN.

Are you comparing what you get from a speed test (local server) to what you get from that US website?

They're going to be different. Telus could have poor routing to it. Shaw might be better but you'd have to test.

Do a tracert in the cmd and see what the route is like.

Doesn't sounds like it an issue with the router even thought it is crap.
this, I don't really understand what are we comparing latency to?.
ISPs might be able to optimize the network routing but over 80ms latency from Calgary sounds to me an IP address on the East Coast US.

Try some speed tests elsewhere. Maybe that website is shitty.
Which speed test website doesn't install a Trojan horse in my hard Ram and tell me "the secret that Didsbury casino owners don't want you to know"?

It is on the east coast US. I'm going to try a VPN and see if it helps, I think it should?

worth a try, I'm assuming work VPN and not a commercial VPN?

once on the corporate VPN, it will have a better routing to the server/services you need to get to.
but you may still have to deal with the latency from your home to the VPN gateway

If you run a tracert and post it, we may be able to make suggestions

Then 24 is still in the range of fine.

Might be a call to whoever is managing whatever IT system your wife is logging into that is clearly piling latency onto the connection.
A ping of 24 on Shaw is at least 3 times worse than it should be. Shaw should be 6-8ms and Telus Fiber 1ms. You should get those pings even with the provider hardware so I think something else is up.

Shaw's been consistent 3ms average pings the last couple of years.

Like someone else says, tracert is your answer. Is it a bad wire to your router? Is it bad to your modem's gateway? Or is it bad routing past that?

Nah its login only. This apparently was a false alarm. Her company emailed her saying it has to be under 100ms, so she's good.

However, I have realized that the router we're using isn't putting out more than about 60 DL, when I plug it into the modem, its over 150 DL. The router is shit.

The stock telus and shaw routers are pretty awful, and are completely garbage for WiFi. Worth upgrading to a real router and just putting your ISP provided hardware into bridge mode.

You said in your first post that you were using the ISP wifi/modem/router unit as a router, but now you have another standalone router connected to the network?

Sounds like it changed shortly after I ditched them then. At any rate, 24 is way too high for Shaw so something else is up.

Whatever telus gives you for a router, thats what I was plugged in to. I unplugged it and plugged direct to the MODEM and its was more than double the speed.

    I only have one router.

One thing I don't like about Telus is the hassle to integrate a 3rd party router if you have both Fibre and their TV service.
    Shaw is much simpler.
