That idea hasn't gone anywhere. It's just below the surface.

Smart people don't suggest it, though.

With the liberal/ndp merger, I think it might be closer than I would hope.

Short term, part time, contract, that seems to be how a lot of places operate.
I personally think this is a big problem and a huge turn off for potential workers. However I don't see this style of hiring going anywhere any time soon as employers continue to try and minimize their liabilities.

I feel they just don't want to work, might think they are entitled to more.....one kid called after 1 week and said that if he could start at 9am, it would be better. He can't make it to work for 7....no joke.

A warm body would be a great start. I dont think we are asking for much
Isn't this how capitalism and supply/demand work?
You hire a lazy kid, he sees what is required and deems your job not worth it because he has options. Burger King offers him a better job and steals your employee. You now have to be better than Burger King to steal their employees.
Kids just don't want to work, that is absolutely not true.

Il bet kids would work for $27/hr. Someone should do some price discovery.

I believe a Buster refrain is wages are sticky. But seriously, anytime someone complains about no hires, the obvious solution is pay more.

Is there a reason he can't start at 9? And by reason, I mean legitimate operational reasons he can't? If you can't pay more, might be a reasonable solution.

You might have misunderstood or are being intentionally obtuse, hard to tell. The kid said he could start at 9am. Arctic said no. The question was about Arctic's reasoning that wasn't acceptable.

Pretty different but I had a conversation last week about how to retain senior engineers. Best idea we came up with was work flexibility. More time off, more flexible work location, flexible hours etc.

I think unless you run a literal assembly line, there's can be room for flexibility.

There should be, except that all clients, everywhere and always will insist on doing everything as wrong as humanly possible.
Front-End Load, skip FEED, run concurrent tasks in parallel and assume "they'll find a way", delay critical decisions, consult stakeholders who aren't stakeholders, assume things that are completely insane, say "I'd feel better if..." etc etc etc.
And all that means that they expect the SME's or the heavy hitter expensive guys to be 1 phone call away, 24/7. (Oh, except when the bill comes for the time they actually spent. And except when you suggest a retainer fee to actually make that resource truly available for more than the 12hr/week they are budgeted for...)

I'm often reminded how glad I am that I'm not "that kind" of engineer.

Parks Canada would be a sweet gig. Fresh air, big floppy hats and get to wear shorts.

    Oh come on!
You can be confident I can find a way to make it fun to point out that insulation needs to go on pipe after the pipe is fabricated, not during.
And I can find a way to make it fun to "go double check with your team as I feel like you need to optimize this schedule more".

Depends what you are working on. You would be fired in one day, insulating after pipe fabrication on my jobs.

My general rule is that most engineers should be fired.
