Anyway I put my name down for a 2022/2023 Golf R last night, minimum 7 month wait but if someone bails on an incoming order I might get lucky. She knows if she wants her own car down the road she can buy it.

I would only make one suggestion as I think everything else has been covered. Don't go for the sporty car with the intention of using it for your kids, especially a used one. You aren't going to have enough time to turn wrenches ( I think you are a guy like me who works on his own stuff). A used V10 M5 is a recipe for disaster. Stuff is going to break and you aren't going to have time to fix it. I had an S4 and it started giving me problems and requiring me to spend time underneath it fairly frequently. It was fun, but fixing it and worrying that something might go at any time was enough to push me into an appliance car (Tesla Model 3).

Get something fun that YOU want. When the kid arrives, then reassess. Also, your wife will come around to a bigger car after loading a stroller into the trunk of a corolla 10 times with a baby screaming.

So if I was to decide I want a GT3… when would I get one?

    2026?

Corolla is often the correct answer.
I thought the correct answer was a Honda Fit?

How many lower model Porsches are you willing to buy from the dealership first?

It's a good thing I'm too poor to get into this, because that business model infuriates me.

I didn’t put down a deposit, it’s too far out. Southcentre VW but I also sent out and email to Northland as I know a salesman there as well from our track group.

Sounds like a car that was never on the table.

    That’s how I feel about my dream of owning a 997 GT3.

Good choice. We've been very pleased with our Golf R, fun to drive (6M) and practical year round. It's worked better then expected with kids as well. Manual or DSG?

Probably a DSG so she can drive it, but now she’s waffling on the size again so maybe I won’t be getting one after all.

Involving a wife with a vehicle purchase is an exercise in futility "I don't feel right about it" "it's the wrong color" "it's too loud" "it doesn't accelerate smoothly"

Porsche has cultivated an unsavory customer community.

It's all about flexing allocations, and endless talk about stitching colors and paint to sample.

The GT3 scarcity is largely a marketing thing anyway. Something like 40% of all 911s sold pre-pandemic are some version of a "GT". I'm pretty sure you could walk into a dealer (maybe not in Calgary), and get a GT3 allocation, you just had to wait for a build slot. Not now, obviously...but you also can't get a Rav4.

She wants a bigger vehicle in general or it's too small for hauling stuff around?

Basically she’s second guessing the size for when we have a child, so she suggested buying now then selling and buying something else in 3 years. I’m not a fan of taking on that kind of depreciation.

You're taking on the depreciation one way or the other.
