Comrade, those homes too will be worth over $1M.
It’s good the govt is thinking ahead since the average home price will be 1 million $. Everyone can pay.
It's easier to make everyone miserable than to make everyone happy.

Lots of people think they are just raising taxes on other people, or giving tax breaks to themselves.
They are very very often incorrect.
Tax the rich is a great slogan. It’s those other people who are rich and aren’t paying their fair share. Totally doesn’t affect me.

I’m not sure this is a tax on just the rich. I bet there are a lot of rich people living in houses that cost less than $1M. And in the flip side I bet a lot of people that own $1M houses can barely afford them.
If the government wanted to be fair they should be taxing net worth.
After actually reading the article, it sounds like the tax is also an attempt to curb flipping. The tax isn’t paid until the home changes hands.
The amount of tax doesn’t seem to be outrageous either, it maxes out at 1% on homes worth $3M+. If you lived in your home for decades, the interest compounding would work in your favour.

A deferred property holding tax may seem reasonable in markets like Toronto and Vancouver, where appreciation has been steady and the tax is miniscule relative to the equity gained, but in a market like Calgary, this would just be salt in the wound to most affected homeowners over the last decade... The future may be different, but that's how it feels today.

Ultracrepidarian
this concept is absolutely outrageous and shame on the CBC for presenting this one sided opinion piece as news.
There is no acceptable reason to continually punish people for no other reason than they exist and work hard. And in the future as was already stated, every single family home will be $1MM plus so nobody will be exempt from this theft.
We already have income tax, carbon tax, sales tax, gasoline tax, liquor tax, import duties, property tax, luxury tax, it is becoming outrageous.
The fact that they try to divide society and somehow claim that taxing the $1MM+ homes will do anything other than continue to siphon money away from individual is ridiculous and disgusting.
I already called it, first it was "nobody should own a gun they are dangerous", then it will be "nobody should own an internal combustion car, they are bad for the environment", next is "nobody should have a SFH they are inefficient and unfair", next will be "nobody should privately own land they are bad stewards and can't be trusted"
Give me a break.
Tap, Rack, BANG!
