Some of the local dummies will tell you that this is the case. In reality, it is far less messy to negotiate exit terms for a jurisdiction - assuming that jurisdiction has sufficient internal critical mass for a separation.

There's also the problem of the coastline moving from the border of Alberta to the west, should Alberta separate. Right now, Alberta has a strategically critical coastline and port at Pincher Creek which will move west under separation, landlocking Alberta.
