People hate Elon and want to dunk in him in any way possible. Heck I don't even like him. However yeah this was a success and an incredible achievement.
The only unexpected is pad got destroyed and a camera car got hit by debris. Everything else is fine for a data gathering mission. Heck even Chris Hatfield called it a success and he knows a thing or 2 about "test" flights.

Cost per pound for this system is something like 1/50th of falcon heavy, which is already the cheapest way to lift mass to orbit. This is not a small change in technology or in impact to orbital technologies.

People think you just invent a new rocket and it works perfectly out of the box. Lol. This is basically v0.1 of the rocket.

What was really shocking to me was how many people apparently work for spaceX.

10,000 people? Seems like a lot.

The Saturn V didn’t need this kind of pageantry.

I don't think they had the same level of internet and social media back then, but I do think it was a kind of big deal.

I think space x had a more fundamentally sound business model than Tesla or Twitter

I was talking more about the blowing up as a conclusion to the gathering of successful test data being all dramatic. Typical Gen Z rocket playing it up for social media.

I'll have to take your word that zero explosions were ever labeled as positive steps in development. That was before my recollection.

May be the game is to make sure potential right people don't fall into hands of competition.

There is at least some level of truth to the flame trench thing. It's been mentioned elsewhere. Would absolutely reduce damage to the pad.

I also believe that it was brought up by the team and overruled. But that may not be as bad as it sounds. When developing new systems, it's not unusual to make some portions of it "on the cheap" until you have the other portions proven. In a technical sense, building a better launchpad isn't difficult. Just takes time and money.

When an explosion ON the pad was such a high possibility, it's probably smart to build a shitty pad.

Now, if that's the direct cause of most of the engine failures, then that's clearly a risk they underestimated. But look at it this way, even with that very high engine failure rate, they passed max Q. That's incredible.

Maybe some of you smart peoples can dig this up for me. I read in one unreliable place, that the fuel system in the super heavy booster is designed to be both cheaper and easier to refuel than previous rockets. I wasn't able to verify that.

Mods can you rename this thread to the SpaceX boosters club mega thread? Kthxbye.

Yeah I think they are going to have to build a new pad... I assume rebuilding destroyed pads is more expensive than just building a better one.

I would imagine rebuilding a better pad that was likely to be destroyed anyway is still more expensive yet. I think ES had that right.

That said humans suck at assessing risk

I have been part of a project where we made one portion of the assembly absolutely as shitty as possible because we had a high chance of failure with a different part. Given budgets and timelines you often need to just say "fuck it" for some portion of a complex project. There are times when that makes sense, and there are times when you can convince yourself it does, even if it actually didn't.
Humans are terrible at assessing risk, as mentioned, and truly awful the more complex the project is.

The pad thing doesn't worry me at all. Like zero.
