a lot of whining by people claiming to be conservative. I preferred Smith to win but my second choice was for toews.

I wouldn't have cared if toews won but it seems people are extremely bent out of shape from Smith winning.

Some of you alleged conservative voters need to relax a bit and stop listening to the newspapers selling you on the world is ending because Smith won narrative.
This. People just want to sit in their little comfort bubbles like a buncha bitches at the end of the day. Complain about shit, but then get spoon fed pablum when the chips are down.

Yep, maybe instead of tearing Smith down, the Toews backers can support him in working together with her.

I have a distinct feeling that after seeing Kenney's complete bullshit, the "unity" will prove to be a total farce and them supporting her will not happen. Some of the candidates in the race have been seen at liberal fundraisers.

Let's be real here, Kenney basically pulled an O'Toole to "unite" Albertan conservatives.

I don't really know what the "right" can do though. You have blue tories and red tories. Red tories align on everything the left wants, claims they want fiscal responsibility (even though socialism is antithetical to the concept) and then call themselves conservatives.

Red tories are our RINOs and for far too long they've been allowed to have an outsized control over Canada rightwing politics. I don't know how you fix that, and now that I've seen the split, I am quite concerned.

Very blue conservatives split from the PCs years ago and formed Wild Rose. Will red tories do the same now? Because we have a leader who actually represents the blue faction?

It is wild to see how socialist/communist the cities are, but they are off the deep end of the left.

I do know that within my social circle, the ones most annoyed about this weren't planning to vote UCP either way.

As long as smith can convince calgary to vote for her she can win. I assume she didn't win calgary in the leadership race. Hopefully most of us have half a brain and still don't vote ndp

I'm guessing Rachel and the rest of the NDP crowd are giddy this morning. If DS panders to the anti-vax / freedumb crowd I think the NDP are going to take the election in the spring.
I don't think the same small batch of NDP voters in Edmonton Bonnie Doon are going to be able to swing an election no matter how much they hate freedom.

Gotta love AB leadership. DS ran as leader of the wild rose and lost, clearly people didn’t want her leading so naturally she becomes the premiere through the leadership vote instead. Which is quite common in AB, only 3 of our premieres have actually ran in a public election and been elected in the past ~70 years. Pretty much all our conservatives premieres are promoted internally and then run for re-election with the incumbent advantage.

Meh. Nenshi ran as an alderman and lost. Then he hired Stephen Carter.

After 3 years of strongly worded letters, a lot of people were ready for someone that would actually wield a hammer and hit something, no matter what something is. That being said, Smith now has to act on everything she campaigned on or she's toast by spring.
I wouldn't be surprised if Leela Aheer tries to resurrect the Alberta Liberal party or the Alberta party. I didn't know much about her, but her campaign was revealing, I don't think Smith would want her in cabinet meetings.

No. People DID want her leading at the time. Then she crossed the floor, and a bunch of old farmers who think that's an unforgiveable crime launched a protest vote for the NDP to send a message.

Which is the ridiculous part of people trying to make this unfounded claim that DS is going to lead to NDP victory. All the people that protest voted all got what they didn't want, an NDP government. And after 4 years of that mess, they won't ever risk a strategic protest vote again.

Crazy that a person that hasn't been elected, has no seat, can be premier with just 45,000 party votes.

    Crazy world.

Man, ya'll are WAY off base with the PC's losing to the NDP.

Smith and Wildrose were a drop in the bucket versus the absolute fucking dickhead that was Prentice that was in charge.

Amazing how the story has changed to it being all Smith/Wildrose's fault when it couldn't be further from the truth. Prentice lost the minute he said he'd seriously consider a PST and told Albertan's that it was "your fault".

Fuck that guy more then Kenney. And slightly less then Redford.

Prentice's March 2015 budget "raised a plethora of taxes and fees to help pay the province's way out of its hole, but he refuses to touch corporate taxes, because he is spooked by the prospect of investors skipping over Alberta for their next billion-dollar energy project, in favour of some more clement petro-state somewhere else. This array of taxes on you and your friends, but not on the C-Suite in Calgary’s office-tower jungle, has provoked populists on the left and right".
Prentice fucked everything up as much as he possibly could. Voters like myself said fuck you, we aren't voting for you, and we didn't.

Yeah, but usually, the premier has a seat, you know, at least won their riding.
