So, I have some unmanaged switches in my home LAN, and one in particular down in my basement near the breaker where all the house wiring terminates has eight ports and was full. So I had been meaning to swap that out for a larger 16 port one, to allow more connections, and maybe future expansion. So I did that, just while thinking about other things. And now that everything is all connected back up, I'm getting 95 mbps at this wired desktop now. Hmmmmm, interesting. So that's clearly fast enough for what I'm doing with my life, but also, noticeably slower than the 177 I am getting at the modem.
So, this is now "solved" in any kind of practical sense, but sort of a larger mystery than it was before now. It doesn't matter, but it's bothering me even more now! Don't seem to have any cables that have a discontinuous pair. Was the old switch slowing me down, that seems crazy. It was a Gigabit switch.
so, really doesn't matter, but I may budget some more time over the weekend to do more detective work.
