Default How to get rid of wood peckers?

Wood pecker seems to be a big problem for us this year. My parents are hearing loud pecking and mating sound through their furnace vents. My sister's house has one pecking a hole on the side to make a nest, and I have a few making holes on the tree right above my deck, creating an endless amount of wood shavings onto my deck/patio set.

Is this something I can deal with myself? or I have to call pest control?

@Buster put on his finest scented jeans and dealt with it, like a man.

Dont fuck with migratory birds, they're federally protected, and some Karen will 100% stumble upon you getting rid of Woody. I'd call a pest control if its really bugging you for the tree above your house, but their nests are protected federally if they're built, so good luck!

When i had flickers fucking with my garage, I sorted it by building a nest box for them. They used it instead of wrecking my siding.

Happy to install a nest box for them or leave them as-is above my that if that's the proper way to deal with them.

The only one I really want to do something about is the one pecking at my parents' place. It's creating this VERY loud noise for them, exactly the same as here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=htMz...nel=LexsLounge

Looks like that video gives you what you need. You can get 'Bird Flashing Tape' that you can put up on sticks around the vent to scare them off..

I have one of these fuckers pecking on my fireplace vent.

Turning the fireplace on gets rid of it real quick

Laser pointers work really well to get them to fuck off if you can beam them in the eyes

They are not endangered at all.

    But they are protected.

    You definitely cannot shoot them.

If you are not shooting them, you cannot do it with destroyer ammo:
    https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/c...-0750734p.html

If you are not shooting them, make sure you don't shoot them with an air rifle that is rated below the point where it becomes a firearm (500 fps):
    https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/g...p.html?loc=plp

If you are not shooting them, make sure you zero your scope with some test shots and figure out your distances to figure out your height over bore aim point and trajectories.

Also, if you are not shooting them, make sure you don't shoot them from cover such as from within your garage with a backstop of your house siding to catch any errant rounds. And make sure you don't shoot from deep in that cover to avoid your barrel sticking out the door or window.

And finally, if you are not shooting them, don't bury them in your yard with a pellet still in them. Don't carry them to the nearest ravine and toss em in for the coyotes to eat.
    Tap, Rack, BANG!

Not much you can do about the house or the tree. They have put a few holes in our wood siding over the last couple years, but I fixed the holes last week and it seems to have deterred them for now. The wood shavings on the deck is not even worth worrying about, IMO.

The rattling on the vents is just a mating season thing, IIRC. We put bird spikes on top of ours, which obviously worked. I've heard chicken wire around the tops keeps them away as well.

I did not give this post a big positive rep.

Let us know if you find something that works. We’ve had 5 grapefruit sized holes punched in our decorative siding panels of the house. Supposedly they think it sounds like rotten wood with insect treats inside. Spent about 1200 bux getting them all fillee in and the deterents and they came back a week later and new softball sized holes in the house in an afternoon.

Put up owls, did the flashing tape and spinners. Nothing works and a few different woodpecker's (seen at least 3 different types) have been taking turns being a pain in our ass. Been tossing ice cubes at them to scare them off, but definitely need a new solution.

They were real bad last year in Calgary and i expect this year will be worse wth the additional offspring..

The downy woodpeckers are harder to not shoot than the northern flickers or pileated ones because they are smaller.

The middle ones are the ones getting my house. Larger than a robin, smaller than a crow. ~magpie sized.

I didn't think it was possible for me to hate a bird more than a magpie until I ran into these stupid fuckers.
