    Default Daycare E-Coli Outbreak

I'm a bit surprised we haven't had a thread on this given how many Beyonder's have kids that are daycare age.

The number of E. coli cases linked to an outbreak at a number of Calgary daycare centres continues to rise, with 231 people now infected, an increase from 190 people on Sunday.

In a statement, Alberta Health Services (AHS) said that, as of Monday afternoon, 25 children and one adult are hospitalized. 11 patients have been discharged since the onset of the outbreak.

21 patients, all of whom are children, have the severe illness hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), said AHS.

Fewer than 10 of these patients are on dialysis, the health agency added.

Our daycare was one of the 11 and thankfully my children did not catch it however I know a few of their friends were pretty sick and spent time in the hospital. Its truly heartbreaking to see just how many sick kids came of it.

However, it blows my mind how bad AHS has bumble fucked this. Communication has been next to none, and what you do get comes at the 11th hour. The first time parents were notified of an issue was at 6pm on the Monday of the long weekend when everyone is gearing to go back to work. Then the next update was "come get a stool sample, when you get a negative test you can go back to daycares starting the 11th or 12th". Yesterday we got our negative sample and the print out of the lab results from our doctor and we figured between that and the daycares getting twice daily updates of names of kids who have got negative tests we would be good to go back on opening day - nope! AHS sends out a letter at 4pm yesterday saying that the only way for your kids to return to any form of child care is with a "recind letter" and that lab results and the results they provide daycares are not sufficient. When you call health link you get one person saying they will be snail mailed to you then another person saying they don't know anything about recind letters then a third person saying "we don't know how they are going to send those out but I would think they will probably call you to get your email".

We just came out of global pandemic dealing with the spread of illness and having to define who is sick and who isn't yet it seems like AHS completely forgot everything we've learned. If they are this bad in dealing with familes of children who are not sick I cant even imagine how bad they are with familes who do have sick kids, and the stress that must cause on top of caring for an incredibly sick child.

The above is only the tip of the iceberg of the dithering, the mind changing, the ever moving goalposts that this situation has caused.

My kid is in the same boat as yours, just fine the whole time and have just been waiting to figure out how to get her back to school.

Main issue is the media seems to have taken a hold of this rather than focusing on issues that actually matter to rile up half the city ( this even went national for some stupid reason) and triggered AHS into going full retard about it. Now the ambulance chasers are on it and are trying to convince the parents they are going to get rich over this situation ( how flush do they think a daycare is lol), when in reality it’s just going to motherfuck us again when the whole thing ends up bankrupt and shut down and we will all be looking for a new daycare in a city where everything decent has a waitlist.

This shit is going to cost me huge when I have to hire a nanny for 1 fucking kid.

Unfortunately good friends of ours were affected.
Their little dude was insanely sick.

In and out of the hospital ~5 x.

In the middle of it all they gave birth to their second kid as well.

They still haven’t identified the source yet have they? Was it from tainted food or contamination? I mean you’d think it matters if they’re gonna reopen the place right?

Nope. They have not isolated the cause. Some bluster about Tuesdays meatloaf but I think that’s just speculation considering the menu and it being beef.

They aren’t reopening the central kitchen and we have to pack our kids food when they go back so that’s how they are reopening.

Oh WTF haha. I'd just switch daycares if they made me pack fucking lunch. That's primarily why I pay them.

It better be a temporary measure, their hot food program is a big part of the value proposition.

Childcare is the worst part of having kids. The older I get, the more I see very good value in having one parent stay home full time.

The value is huge, IMO. I think the only case in which it makes sense to have both parents at work is if they both need to be working for personal fulfilment and general life satisfaction (which I would think you'd get more of being able to parent your kids full time, but lets not go down that rabbit hole), or if you literally can't make ends meet on a single income. In my case, there is no dollar amount (within reason, she'd maybe go back if she made 7 figs/yr or something) that my wife could make that would make it worthwhile to send her back to work before both kids are in grade school.

We are in the same situation, almost 3 year old goes, and our 1 year old had her intro day the Friday all this shit happened. Thank god neither are sick, so trying to ride out this clusterfuck of AHS blunders with a positive attitude. Could have been much worse.

Big question is exactly what Killramos mentioned... Class action lawsuits getting geared up, are daycares insured for this shit? Are they fucked? Should I start scrambling to find a new daycare now? What a fucking gongshow.

I have a colleague whose daughter was super sick but thankfully is doing much better now. Its crazy how kid's mind works because he said she misses going to the hospital every day because she saw her friends and got popsicles. But he said she was so so sick that he's just happy she remembers her friends and the popsicles and not the needles and the illness.

The fact that a lawsuit was filed before I even collected my kid's literal shit is wild and makes me sick. I'm not sure how this is the daycare's fault when its all but confirmed it was the central kitchen. And @KillyMcBilly is right, its going to fuck childcare long term. Its insanely unfortunate that kids are sick, but not sure how suing the daycare is going to make this okay. Especially when the kitchen will shutter and go away. The friends I mentioned were contacted by the lawyers while they were still doing daily hospital visits.

I feel bad for our daycare director. She's been our only contact throughout all this and she is passing on everything she gets from AHS but because AHS is so fucked she has basically just been dealing with irrate parrents.

    Fuck if I know.

All I know is that they're often the highest paid employees at any company. Only execs make more.
