Default ELI5 - What is the new "podcast registration law"? Free speech problem? Confused

Can someone explain what this really means in practical terms? There's some new "podcast distribution rule" that is bad somehow? I don't follow this stuff.

I haven't seen anything about this on my normal news sites.

I read this as a way for the government to ensure the content being promoted through online services will comply with some form of a standard. Just like how radio stations in Canada has to play a percent of Canadian content.

Yes because the govt needs to approve what we are exposed to in the media so that we dont get exposed to information. I mean misinformation.

So like, every podcast would need Cancon inside it to be distributed in Canada? So basically making every foreign podcast illegal? It can't mean that, can it?

No, it means the service provider has to register. So Spotify for example, not each individual podcast creator. Which I would assume leads to "Hey, you've only got 5% of your available content from Canadian podcasts, you need to put more in, or remove 20% of your non-Canadian content from you Canadian library"

Yup that is how I read it too.

Have to remember most of these "streaming" services are non Canadian businesses.

Ok, that makes some potential sense, and is not as totally catastrophic, although, it almost certainly means a reduced selection of international podcasts. I like some weird British statistics podcasts, if those go away I'll be pretty pissed.

A good summary from Michael Geist, as always: https://www.michaelgeist.ca/2023/10/...istrationregs/

It's basically the first step, getting them to register as a broadcaster in Canada to make them easier to regulate.

The regulation is what is worrying, as they will then be subject to Canada's various broadcasting rules, from having to contain a certain amount of Canadian content to being censored according to Canada's loose definitions of "hate speech."

It may lead to the same situation as bill C-18, where meta simply put a blanket ban on all news on its platform. So audio streamers like, for example, Spotify, may find it easier to just remove certain podcasts from being offered on its platform in Canada.

I used to really resist this notion. Like, how can you have an entire country of retards run by retards?

But I see the cult of Trudeau is as strong as ever and I read somewhere that 70% of Canadians are on mind-altering drugs... not sure how true that is but it sure explains a lot!

How many podcasts make the over $10MM annual revenue to qualify for registration? $10MM in Canada. What is the total Canadian podcast market worth lol

I mean it seems dumb, but it’s a dumb nothing burger

Mainstream podcasts usually get picked up by a company. Here is an example https://www.nytimes.com/2022/02/17/a...formation.html

They aren't going after all the little guys... its the major corporations that host them that they want. They are going to start treating streaming services like radio stations and since there is nothing in place.. this is what happens.

Look at it this way... how many radio stations are under 1 name? How many are under Corus Entertainment? Hint.. a lot https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o..._Entertainment
