This is my take on it as well. It's been going on for so long, and has spanned generations, so it's difficult to stop the momentum of hatred. Both sides feel they are in the right, but both are actually in the wrong. Isreal has a checkered past, which Western media and politicians would like us to forget since they are our "ally". But the fact is, they really did the Palestinian people dirty - who have good reasons to be pissed off. Then when they rose up to try to fight for their homeland, they were stifled and their territory shrunk down to a tiny fraction of what it once was. Call them terrorists (because they are) but it was pretty inevitable Hamas would incite violence as Isreal continued their campaign, and while I'm quick to condemn large-scale violence, I think it at least has solid motive.
With that said, attack military installations if you must, but mass killing any citizen you can find (including women and children) had no possible outcome other than massive retaliation from Isreal. I'm not really sure what Hamas felt they would accomplish, other than forcing their early retirement to sleep with virgins. But, here we are...
