Default Yemen Red Sea shipping disruptions and piracy

Thought this needed it's own thread. Some portion of this may be related to the current 2023 Israel-Palestine war, although its a tenuous connection.

Shipping through the Red Sea has been suspended by Maersk and Happag-Lloyd due to security issues in the Yemen-controlled strait. Ships have recently been attacked by missiles, helicopters, and speedboat.

Traffic through the Suez Canal must transit this strait to reach Europe and Asia.

I'd guess the US navy has at times provided some security in this area, but it maybe occupied closer to Iran and Israel, which are several thousand kilometers away.

Could have a big impact on European countries, and global trade.

The US has essentially policed economically vital sea lanes since WW2. It's part of the compact where the world accepts the us dollar as reserve currency. In exchange the us gets stability and the economic benefit of begging the reserve currency.

Is the US still policing this sea lane? Or rather, are they attempting to? Because it seems if so, they aren't effective.

Does the RCMP police the QE2? Does CPS police Crowchild? Whether they do or not is independent of how well they do. And the Red Sea is much bigger than the Calgary-Edmonton corridor. Can the US even commit the necessary number of ships to police the Red Sea to your satisfaction? Why is it even their primary responsibility?

The USA has made it thier business to police global sea lanes. This is probably the smallest and most easily controlled choke point of the many that they seem to care about.
About 100 square miles would do it.

The Red Sea is ~170,000 square miles. 0.05% would do it?

Still a lot of pirates outside the choke point and the Houthis, with Iranian weapons, are causing an additional headache.

I could be wildly off on how easy or hard it is to "police" those straits, or the entire red sea region.

I'm fascinated by, but not expert in, naval stuff. If anyone can link to an "explainer" type article I'd love to do some reading. Or if anyone has any idea how the US, particularly, decides which international sea lanes are vital to control, and which aren't. I can't begin to rank them. The US government certainly does this calculus.

I once read a book about Djibouti, which had the title "Djibouti". Also once worked with a dude from Djibouti. Through all that, I'm still not totally sure how to say that word.... Incredible stuff I know.

This. A great book which explores this topic in detail, the ongoing shift from US acting as world police and future implications is: https://www.amazon.ca/End-World-Just.../dp/006323047X

Is there something wrong with Zeihan? Premise of the book looks interesting... a bit doomsday-ish sure but still interesting. Decently reviewed

No, I dont think there are any issues with him.

I do think he is a bit of a sensationalist. He sells books based on long-term predictions that will be difficult or irrelevant to disprove. Good work if you can get it.

The americans are more obssessed with the Strait of Hormuz to protect the reserve currency not to mention much of Asia's energy travels through there. The Egyptians protect the Suez quite heavily, it's extremely militarized around there. It's the strait entering from the south which is mostly shipping coming from Asia to Europe. The Chinese has remained pretty neutral through the area but many of their shipping companies go through the Red Sea to Europe. It's more likely that the Chinese would go in if it bothered them enough, I don't think the Americans will bother with this.
