AFAIK the city is legally obligated to validate all the signatures on the petition within a set amount of time. If the petition people kept making it sound like they had 100k+ signatures when in reality they have a fraction of that then that feels like it's them wasting the money for providing false info. No?

If they didn't verify the amount of signatures and just said "Nah, take our word for it, there's not enough", how well would that go over?

I'm sure there's more people hired than needed, but they still need it done.

But haven't the petition organizers fully acknowledged that they have nowhere near the required number?
I think they have, but I could be wrong as I have certainly not followed this story closely.

well, you count the lines first of all, but I think they need to attempt to verify each line in any event. Look for duplicate and invalid entries.

I have no doubt 12 people will spend a month on this. It's not a trivial task.

Its not very good. The data that it spits out is missing a lot of things. Most of the data issues are to do with the data itself being not being clean. i.e postcode spacing, missing letters etc. More time is spent cleaning that up than verifying the data itself.

Secondly, you can't use electoral data to third parties for verification. i.e you cant send government info to India.
A manual process has its flaws but given the UK Post Office Scandal. I don't think either side would want this done electronically.
