. “Relying on consumers to fill in the critical, but sometimes non-obvious or unknown, details for their insurer to then assess risk and provide an appropriate premium back to the consumer can be a cumbersome and unreliable proposition,” a Lexis Nexis spokesman told Insurance Business when promoting the service. Chicco, presumably following legal advice, has refrained from further comments post-lawsuit filing.

GM’s OnStar reports data after every drive, including specific driving behavior data, including hard braking events, hard acceleration events, speeds over 80 miles per hour, average speed, late night driving, seat belt usage, when and where these events occur, and the number of miles driven.

The controversy has caught the attention of experts like Georgetown law professor David Vladeck, who, speaking to the NY Times warned “Just wait for the avalanche. It’s coming.”

The debate has also caught the attention of lawmakers - Massachusetts Senator Ed Markey has already asked the Federal Trade Commission to take a close look at the practice. “With new advances in vehicle technology and services, automakers have been vacuuming up huge amounts of data on drivers, passengers, and even individuals outside the vehicle,” he wrote. “Based on public reporting and responses to my own inquiries into these practices, automakers face few, if any, limitations on the collection, use, and disclosure of this data. Consumers are often left in the dark. I therefore urge the FTC to investigate the automakers’ data practices and take all necessary actions to protect the privacy of all road users.”

Going to be awkward when the driver facing camera notices your propensity for a few road pops after hockey practice

The hue and cry about smartphones being spyware will be repeated with automobiles. I don't see long-term much consumer pushback, but could be some interesting lawsuits and legislation in the meantime. Overall, I have zero confidence in any government or regulatory body to provide useful and thoughtful legislation on this issue.

My work has a new pop up for AI sites that state new terms you need to accept to proceed and part of it is the company then real time monitors your pc for a set period of time.
I always click decline and leave the site. Don't need my pc flagged for real time monitoring.

Ours tells us that while AI can be a useful tool, we must not feed it any confidential company information

I don't have access to anything confidential enough to damage the company, I typically ask it for troubleshooting information on things I don't understand, like Excel macros and javascript stuff that programmers have written with no thought of how we actually need to use it in the real world

    https://foundation.mozilla.org/en/pr...d-for-privacy/

Remember that Mozilla blew this open last year?

Nissan earned its second-to-last spot for collecting some of the creepiest categories of data we have ever seen. It’s worth reading the review in full, but you should know it includes your “sexual activity.” Not to be out done, Kia also mentions they can collect information about your “sex life” in their privacy policy. Oh, and six car companies say they can collect your “genetic information” or “genetic characteristics.” Yes, reading car privacy policies is a scary endeavor
Car companies will sell us out for extra revenue stream.

    Interesting topic.
At what point has capitalism taken it too far?

Data collection is designed to drive revenue or reduce liability in some way shape or form.

Do you think the majority of people are aware of the potential ramifications of giving up all of their personal data to big businesses, Gov't, etc?

My Toyota app on my phone keeps asking for my location data so it can tell me where I parked last, but I've seen reports in the US that the Toyota app will forward driving information from your phone to insurance companies, so I keep declining.

I always want companies to have as little information about me as possible. Hell, my mom came by and was talking about how she wants to do a 23 and me kit, and I talked her out of that fast.
