So educate me guys. Is basically everything in dim sum steamed? I've been a few times, always silver dragon, and I just don't get the appeal. Maybe I'm too white for this? Although I like other "authentic" Asian foods.

I find it to be way too time consuming to DIY at home. Not worth my time at all.
I haven't been to silver dragon since I got married there. Bad memories.

Not necessary. There are fried stuff too. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Central Grand is probably the most expensive, but my go to. Just don't go too early. The 1st batch out are most likely leftovers. The highlight here is egg tarts. I would say best in western Canada. It's the one thing that dim sum joints in Richmond can't touch.
But since I lived in Chinatown north, the convenient go to are T Pot (Harvest Hills) and Ginger Beef (Conventry Hills).
Other ones in NW are Bobby Chao's (food was good but worker there pissed me off years ago and have not been back) and Edgemont City (new owner sucks). Golden Central on center/Mcknight is ok at best.
Calton is a new joint by Golden Acre near McKnight. Very popular right now. Line up out the door all the time and questionable table arrangement right now to accommodate the traffic to the point that I'm sure they violated plenty of fire codes. Tried their dinner and it's pretty good, can't vouch for their dim sum. The staff seems to be from Edgemont City, so I wonder if previous owner sold out and start new.
End of the day, we can't beat Richmond.

Bobby Chao +1. A couple of us old school beyonders supported Bobby in his early years when his first restaurant in Forest Lawn was dead every single day. Ate there daily haha.

Thanks guys. Lots of options.
I've only ever had Dim Sum in the GVA and Hong Kong, so this helps.
Looks like U & Me doesnt deliver this far south.

Your goto would be Bill's in Bonavista.

Only decent traditional Chinese food I know south of Southland Dr.
I see a new dim sum restaurant is being built in Chinook by Chapters, called Tin Tin or something, could be another options for southerners without treking all the way to dirty north/downtown.

Really? Most frozen dim sum fully steams in 10 to 20 min. Way more convenient to make at home vs drive and sitting around waiting IMO. Just don't buy the packaged Walmart & T&T stuff. Plenty of mom & pop places in town that make decent quality frozen. On wintery weekend mornings I find it much more convenient to not even leave the house and have the steam heat up the home. And it's also about half the cost. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
The problem is variety. I have a 3 level steamer and have to make a couple rounds worth. And come on, I'm Chinese, fuck pre packaged shit from T&T haha. My go to used to be Fortune on Center St back in the day for frozen, but they aren't as good as the old days before they went semi mainstream. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. You can easily tell which restaurant has their own dim sum chefs or sourced from factories.

For those that steams dim sum at home, how do you make it so that the bottom doesnt stick.
I tried steaming with a 3 level plastic steam and 1 level bamboo steamer, bottom keeps on sticking.
Always have 3-5 sticky rice with pork and eggs in the freezer though, love that stuff
I used to go there until I got staples in my food on two different occasions. They just looked at me like I planted it thereThis quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

In the north, 1 in 3 is Chinese. In the south, it's probably 1 in 10 to 15. You can't expect too many good authentic Chinese restaurants in the south.
