Default home security and Network question.

Utility room is wired with 12 Ethernet drops (2 to each room) i need to get a netwrok switch to get all working.
right now i just have the few connections i use everyday plugged into the back of the router.

also have 6 POE drops for security cameras in the same spot.

    my questions are.
i could go with a 8 port poe Network Video Recorder for the cameras. and then a network switch large enough for the 12 Ethernet and be done.

or if i went with a pc for the security instead of the NVR. Would i need like a 24 port network switch that has poe ports and regular ports for rj45?

or what is the best way to set up what i have.
i like the idea of a NVR as its plug and play.

but is the pc the better way to go with the right software. what is the right software? my wife wants to be able to access the footage on her iphone also.

Dedicated security PC, 16 port unmanaged switch, 8 port POE connected solely to security PC.

The security PC will probably require a second NIC for internet/WAN connection so the cameras can talk to an online service, or so that your local software can talk to an online DDNS (could also get a static IP internet account).

blueiris for the software. i prefer the flexibility of a software solution over a DVR. they also have a android and iphone app.

not want i wanted to hear. i cant imagine its too cheap to build one of them as i dont have an extra pc laying around. does it need a dedicated dvr card or anything? or does the poe connect to computer and software does the rest?

no, for the full package (multiple cameras). its limited to 50 cameras or something. the apps are a little pricey though, make sure you factor that in ($12? or around there for the android app). if your looking for cameras, look at the hikvision DS-2CD2032. they go for cheap on aliexpress and outperform all the noname stuff by a mile. costco has them (rebranded as swann cameras) but they are a quite a bit more from costco currently.

yes i am gonna get the hikvision
2-2732's for the front and back
2-2532 for in the back yard
2 2432's for in the house
    on the way right now.

i wanted domes over the bullet . i didnt go with the cheaper 2132 as i need to wall mount and the 2132 is only 2axis? and the ones i ordered are 3 axis
im not worried about the few dollors for the apps. i have had over $50 credit on my itunes account for years. started at $100

man after days of reading forums im more confused then ever.

how powerful does a pc need to be to run blueiris and 6 cams?

does the computer need a dvr card?

this pc is $200 bucks refurbashed at Memory express. would it do the job?
    http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX52243

or this one is $300 and looks to have better everything compared to above.
    http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX51938

also i still dont understand why i shouldn't use a 24port switch that has 8 poe.
then it would be connected to my 12 Ethernet drops and my 6 poe drops on the same switch. or is there an advantage 2 the separate switches?

i think im gonna have to try and find someone to do all the network setup when that time comes.

From what I've read you don't need anything too powerful just something that you can put a bunch of drives in depending how long you want to keep the vids for. I'd guess 6 camera is going to take up lots of space (even on motion detection).
Have a read:blueiris on WHS I can't remember if he has a HP WHS or a custom setup but most people's WHS weren't/aren't very powerful and don't have any problems running cameras.
I'm pretty sure you don't need a dvr card if you use the blueiris software.

Don't by that HP one... I had that at work for a couple of years and fuck it was slow. They "upgraded" me from a P4 to that! I was so happy when I got rid of that POS.
I'd look for one where you can at least put in 4 drives unless you want to have a bunch of USB external drives or a 4/5 day external enclosure.

I have bunch of old stuff you could probably have if you want to go the used/refurbashed route.

Large POE switches are expensive so it's more a cost thing... if you have lots of $$ go for it there might be 2ms lag max if you string switches together.
    I have a router (#1), an 8 port (#2), and 2x 4 ports (#3,4) on my network and there's no lag.
I'd like to pickup a nice 24 port one when I have some extra money but it works for what I need to do.

    edit: spelling

blueiris does direct to disk recording (no re-encoding of the video stream) which keeps the processor demands down. a lot depends on your frame rate and resolution. my 2032 (which is 3mp) uses roughly 5gb of data for every 3 hours of recording at 10fps, but there is about a million setting you can play with that changes that.

should work fine, ive had good luck with netgear (although not that switch specifically). not alot of gigabit ports though, the cameras are fine on slower ports, but youll want to make sure your computer (and nas if you have one) are on gigabit ports. youll want to read some reviews too, some of those switch are pretty noisy with their cooling fans (if thats an issue for you)

you can always use a regular switch with an injector as well. here is an injector with surge protection:

    http://www.ebay.ca/itm/L-Com-BT-CAT5...item461af2dcc9

    and a plain injector

    http://www.ebay.ca/itm/8-Ports-Passi...item2a38c63c22

youll need a power source for both those injectors.

thanks for the replies. noise is not a problem as its in the utility room with the furnace.
i noticed the very few gigabit ports. wont be a problem for many years i imagine. i only got shaw 50. and out of the 12 house Ethernet ports only 2 are ever used right now. one for home PC. one for media PC.
i have found that same net-gear i listed for as little as $275 shipped from ontario using shopbot.

the second switch is unmanaged, so unless you need QoS or VLans, i would probably go with the second one for speed.

All with the outdoor cat6. Do I just wipe the gel of the twisted pairs?

Line up your wires just like normal and crimp on your ends. Standard is the same either way. Just wipe the gel off the stripped portion before you put it on the keystone.

i use to have overhead power running from house to garage. but trenched gas and power to the garage when i bought house.
so i ran cat6 overhead thru those service entry caps for garage cams.
