I'm ok with it as long as the start installing them on burnt ones. It may look shitty for a year or so having different light colors but why dump a perfectly good light bulb that the people already paid for.

Problem is I don't think these are just bulbs...Originally posted by DENZILDON

IE. An entire block once every 6 years. This reduces the amount of manhours needed to replace a bulb.

Magical internet money for everyone!
My neighborhood, plus some others in Medicine Hat switched over to LEDs last fall. I have them across the street from my bedroom. It's different, but better I think. It feels like the light is more directed at the street and sidewalk than the old lights. I don't know now because it's been too long but I think it was brighter in the house with the old lights than with the new lights.

I was reading that by switching over to LED, that the cost is recouped in 6.5 years.
That is actually pretty good! Frees up some cash for other city projects, but still expect your taxes to continually rise by double & tripple the rate of inflation.

Yea, cutting power consumption by over 50% and saving energy is a waste of money..Originally posted by M.alex
Such a stupid waste of money
Anyway..
The color of these lights is more natural. But people will complain about everything.

With the move towards art, I am surprised Nenshi didn't insist that the lights have blacked out portions so that they make designs when they are light. So that there are little fish or rings or birds being projected down on the ground.

Sorry, what move towards art is this you speak of?Originally posted by triplep
With the move towards art,
Are you referring to the 1% rule that Bronconnier brought in a decade ago? Or the fact that they cut that down recently to 0.5% for major projects?

I only need enough light to not trip on the curb while walking. I'm not doing a photo shoot.
Electricity is already dirt cheap in Calgary.
Now Hawaii, at 30 cents for industrial - that is high.

With how the city manages projects there is 0% chance it will be recouped in that time frame.Originally posted by spikerS

cheaper for the city after 6-8 years.. but our taxes will still increase.
According to the pics the new street lights automatically upgrade trucks parked underneath them!
Last time I was in Honolulu, I noticed on the way to the airport a tonne of houses with solar panels on the roofs. It looked like practically everyone had them, at least in those neighborhoods along side that elevated freeway.Originally posted by ZenOps

Speaking of LEDs and Rage, any update on the home bulb front...
From your research and testing, which bulbs are the best performing and recommended these days?
I ask partly because I noticed Home Depot doesn`t seem to have the Phillips bulbs like these any more:
Have those been superceded with a newer better model?
