    Default Battery resting voltage 12.3v

My car was parked on the street today for almost 12 hours. I decided to check my battery voltage on my compustar remote starter before I started the car, just for the heck of it and it read 12.3v. So I decided to drive the car a bit to recharge the battery, it started just fine even with only a 12.3v reading. With the engine running, heaters on, radio on and headlight on, the battery voltage reading I got on my remote starter was 14.4v. After driving the car for a bit and waiting 4 to 5 hours or so after parking it, it seems to be holding a charge of 12.6v. Should I be worried? I just replaced this battery last year. Are the battery voltage readings on the remote started accurate and reliable? :o

I wouldn't trust any voltage readout unless you have a meter directly on the terminals.

When the car is on and accessories all running your probably reading the high voltage off the alternator rather than the battery which explains that change. Your battery probably isn't varying that much at all actually. Not to mention the cold will affect the voltage slightly when its cold. As long as your battery is in the engine bay it will heat up after driving and slightly increase voltage.

TBH i think you are being a bit paranoid about your 12V battery being at 12.3 volts. Call us when its 10 or 11...

Only measure batteries at the posts with your multimeter. I'm sure compustart isn't exactly accurate.

You're fine and it's CCA or cold crank amps that matter on your car starting in the winter. Not 12V. Every battery is 12V.

what is the problem here? a 12V battery is supposed to be above 12V all the time. below 12V you have a problem

Oh I think 12.3v actually shows signs of significant battery wear and I'd definitely do some load tests on it to make sure it will function properly this winter.

That's what I thought too. I read somewhere that 12.3v means that the battery is charged at only around 50%

and that's a best case scenario, realistically it's probably a lower percentage.

Mine reads at least 13-13.5V all the time. Your car is eff'd

Not when he was doing the testing in the winter WITH the starter installed... That will dramatically affect measurement.

So if i understand correctly OP comes on here, gets 8 straight people telling him its fine.

1 Person tells him otherwise and he's back to thinking the sky is falling.

OP maybe you should just get your car serviced at the stealership from now on and get a factory starter...

Most people are familiar with cold-induced battery issues. More than one worker has had to call in on a winter day because the car won't start. What's usually happening is that the cold weather is slowing down the chemical reactions that create the battery's power (see How Batteries Work to learn more) -- heat speeds up chemical reactions, and cold slows them down. So there's less power available to get the truck's engine running. When it's 0 degrees F (-18 degrees C), a fully charged battery has less than half its potential starting power [source: NASCAR].

    A new fully charged battery is 12.6v.. 6 cells x 2.1volts
