Not ironic. Governments have inconsistent positions all the time.

You realize that legalizing marijuana is just moving the line a little bit, yes? Tell me when Krokodil is legal.

People still are hanging on to the old-fashioned, and obsolete political sprectrum (left/right, or conservative/liberal).

The political landscape is rotating away from those linear spectra, and towards one where the spectrum is authoritarian/libertarian, or "big state"/"Small state".

When you hear people say the following: "I'm a fiscal conservative, but a social liberal" you are really hearing people say is that they are some form of libertarian (perhaps very mildly so), without them even realizing it.

One hopes that the new Conservative party understands that there is HUGE hay to be made by capturing this sentiment.
