Why does this poll start at 6?!

Or is this based on weekly? What counts as “work”?

When I use to be stuck at a desk, I was paid on 7.5 and 0.5 unpaid for lunch. For a total of 8hrs at a desk

I use to spend about 7 of those 7.5hrs on beyond though

Being self employed I’m probably at 4hrs of actual work a day, but that’s rarely in a solid block and sometimes spills into the weekends. Don’t have to be anywhere at a set time though, which is the key balancing life and work

A beyond baller once said to me:

Some people get so obsessed with how much a lifestyle costs, and building an empire to pay for it, they forget to live. #smallpimplife

Regardless of what I won in the past.....

These last 6 months I’ve been on a 20/10 schedule up in Grande Prairie working roughly 12-16 hours a day. Most of the time I would skip my 10 days off just to help my bosses out.

It’s been in recent weeks that I’ve managed to hire a couple of good guys to help out and now I plan to be up in GP once a week for 2 days, resulting in 8 days a month working.

It’s been HARD working as much as I have but hopefully its time to start spending more time with family and basically working a FT job but not having to do anything.

I work 6:30 to 3 officially....but really it's more like 7:15 to 3, with lots of chatting in between, plus a lunch for however long it takes (usually eat in our kitchen so just 30 min, but if chatting maybe an hour or more). Get all my shit done. Work a few nights a month without getting paid OT, hence the flexible work arrangement.

People hated me at my old company because everybody would put in 10-12 hour days and I would rarely work over 8. Everyone was on salary and bonuses and share offerings were structured. People get so caught up over the optics of being at work and ignore the ability to work efficiently.

I agree completely with this. Efficiency is the key to balance.

    Great post.

I only work on wberage of 10-13 days a month, but those days I do work, I’m travelling. I don’t have kids so being home every night isn’t a big deal for me.

I have a strange schedule that you would think offers a ton of work life balance and maybe it does but I find it annoying. I work 4 on 6 off(12's) one of the strangest schedules for a office job. Going on 2 years and hope to change back to a normal M-F very soon.

Mine is similar. I do 3 x 12.5 hour shifts a week, so there are times when I can have 8 days in a row off without using vacation days or anything. Honestly, I don't want to go back to a M-F job now.

For the better part of 11 years, my minimum work week was 84 hours. Busy weeks would be 120 hours.

Since the crash of the oil industry, I've moved on and started my own businesses. I now work around 35 hours a week.

I find its great for the kids but harder for my wife. When I am off she is typically working the following day so its tough to coordinate are schedules as she goes to bed early and starts early. Lots of upside, definite down side also.

    .
Was that intensity of work all year or seasonally? Working wellsite I was 84 hours/week but probably 6-7 months of the year. The rest I didn't work/travelled so over a year it was pretty slack.

Seems like 40 hours/week is still fairly normal. Honestly I thought it would be much closer to BokChoy's experience with companies squeezing you dry because ten people behind you will do the job if you don't.

Wellsite, so it was normally limited to no days off from October to March. Then another 2 months working in the summer. During those years I managed to travel at least 4 weeks a year, and had a couple months to just boot around locally.

Small business so depends on the week. Sometimes it's 50hrs+, sometimes I can get all my stuff done in <15hrs. I rather be busy though and I love what I do so I much rather it be 50 hrs than 15 hrs. There's only so much internet one can surf during the day.

In terms of work life balance I think this is as good as it gets. Office is 7 mins from my house and I never have to go there on the weekends. There's no fixed schedule so I can work whenever I want. Do a HIIT class at 915am before work? Sure! Going to leave 2 hours early to get a haircut? why not! Taking a few days off next week because I found a good vacation deal? Yes! I think this will come in very handy once we start having kids.
