The top two are the Apple TV 4k and the nvidia shield. Both in my opinion are the best if the best. I have Dolby vision TVs so Apple wins the battle for me there but the ease of adding kodi and others to the shield make it very desirable.
I also picked up a few fire tv stick 4ks for family members and was extremely easy to setup kodi and other streaming services on it. Was also really impressed that it does frame rate matching. I don’t think there is a better streaming device under $150 then the fire tv 4K and you can get it for 49-59 on sale.

Love the Shield, can catch it on sale lately for $150-180. Well worth it for full app support, don't waste your time or money on any cheap Chinese android boxes
The suggestions seem like overkill...given that he is used to using a Wii...
ROKU is my vote, super simple to use and will do 4K and all that stuff as well. $69.99 on sale right now https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product...12556720.aspx?
I use ROKU 3s all over my house, at my parents place (computer illiterate) and at my sisters place as well..super simple to use. I use mine for Netflix, Plex and Youtube.
If you don't need 4K, this roku verison is $35 https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product...12298042.aspx?
The remotes are all WiFi direct so they don't need any line of sight to function.

Firestick was cheap and super easy for us. Mainly use Netflix but got Prime and use that occasionally. We're pretty low users when it comes to TV though.

I love our Roku, we have an older one but it works pretty simple. Also a bit of a silly thing but having a headphone jack on the remote is kinda useful if one of you wants to watch tv while the other sleeps or something
Firwstick seems pretty appealing for Netflix and prime and YouTube. Anyone know how it.stacks up against Chromecast?

I've been happy with my Roku 3. Got a U.S. FireStick for Christmas, Typical Amazon BS, it doesn't work for Prime in Canada. Will have to try VPNing.
It has a very good Plex client, way better than the one on my Samsung TV, so it will get some use.
Installed Kodi on it, damn near unusable. I still don't see the appeal. I can download a tv show off of Usenet in less than 4 minutes, and put it on plex, where it plays flawlessly. Not sure why I'd waste my time trying to stream.
FireTV 4k stick if you want to go cheap
Nvidia Shield if you want to expand and start doing things such as emulation (SNES, PS1 etc)
I have both of those but prefer the versatility of the shield. It's nice to be able to play all my roms without having to switch devices

Apple TV connects to headphones over Bluetooth. Best thing ever in bed.

Yeah but then you need fancy Bluetooth headphones. IF you have them then that’s a better setup but I can use a crappy pair of 10$ ear buds which is niceThis quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
what advantage does the 4k version have (aside from 4k compatibility obvs)? This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

Great discussion so far guys...Thanks.
Mostly my wife will use it for Prime Video, Netflix etc...
If I can access media on a hard drive attached to my wireless router it would be a bonus.

Both the Fire tv stick and Roku will do that. The fire stick will give you a bit more options with customization and black market streams. I would still suggest the fire stick 4K for future use and the ability to use kodi or other streaming sources. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

Apple TV has a few apps that can stream from a local share but it’s a hit and miss experience depending on file formats. Plex is what I use as it can transcode anything that’s not native to the Apple TV.

Shield TV
Or Mi Box S from US for 1/2 price of Shield TV.
Runs the same Android TV platform.
I think for his usage the Apple TV and shield are both over kill.
I use my old roku in the RV now because it has a micro USB slot that I load with movies before trips. I like the fire tv better then the roku and the Apple TV miles better then both but there is a big price difference there.

I dont think the Apple TV can do Prime videa still (maybe I'm wrong).
Shield and then Roku.
