Do they make winter tires in bus and semi sizes?
They do, but pretty much just rear tires. And even then, they run them all year round. They are just a heavy lug tread.

Interesting. Why don't more ppl get them? Do they cost significantly more?
They scratch garage floors if you turn your wheels while parking, and they can be noisy as fuck depending on your vehicle. They barely cost anything, I think the last time I had studs installed (in a studdable tire), it was $60 for all 4. They also reduce fun when you purposefully want to ice drift.

They're overkill 99.999% of the time, but when realize you really could have used them it's likely because you just hit the car in front of you while on a sheet of ice (thanks to Calgary's wonderful thaw/freeze cycle). Not that I've done that...

They're certainly big, but I don't know if they are the BEST I've tasted.

I was that .001% on the second day of this storm. I got into a slide going onto an offramp and 100% i wouldve hit the curb if it weren't for the studs.

and I did not have the only say in the matter (most people just want it done ASAP and don't care about quality).

If anything we made a better decision because we had a consensus and were all on the same page.

Some peoples manhood is closely tied to their insistence on using substandard tires for the conditions.

    Or something to that effect.

Depends on the vehicle. I can manually out-stop most ABS systems 99% of the time.

    Weight equals massive advantage.
Weren’t you an engineer in a previous life? Didn’t know large vehicles were immune to the laws of physics

(Object in motion… large mass… etc)

Yes, but also more weight means higher coefficient of friction. There's also probably some consequential aspect of it being able to compress/cut through the snow better as well (both of these are exemplified by rally cars using super narrow tires for winter/ice runs - smaller contact patch has the same effect as more weight).

Most of this is actually high school physics IIRC. There was a significant overlap between that and first year eng physics.

This is why 18 wheelers stop on a dime in winter, and why motorcycles are just as effective.

Yes, but all is meaningless when the coefficient of friction is 0 when it cuts through to pure ice without the studs (that your narrow rally car example would have for icy conditions) and the thing does not stop, which is the factor that every single 4x4 in the ditch seems to forget

Well yeah, more mass takes more time/distance to stop. I agreed with you the first time. The point of contention is to the extent which "all season tires" benefit from having more weight on them.

I'm not that type of engineer, but I know enough to say we're both grossly oversimplifying this. Furthermore since we're each talking about two separate variables of a multivariable equation, we can actually both be right.

Fair, as long at coupe’s almost impossible to quantify, simplistic response continues to be meaningless

Thread split to Grade-10 augments about mú, the coefficient of static friction, please.
Then close the door and lock it on YoLoBeRmEr right away.

*But why isn't it the dynamic coefficient since car is moving?!??

The best vehicle I’ve ever driven in winter was the 96 ford windstar on blizzak mz03. It was amazing.

Sandbags in the trunk + RWD = stop on a dime every time. What could go wrong?
