$16 per hour is 33k a year. Thats more than enough I think. And especially for nannys that dont have that much experience. If I was paying $20 an hour I would want my meals cooked for me too at the moment I have to do all that myself.
It costs more than that, unless you're cheating taxes. You have to pay employer EI/CPP contributions as well. I honestly think you're a little out of whack on what nannys are worth.

You will make that at Starbucks soon and get paid benefits, savings plan, vacation, EI etc. Along with upward mobility.

Not 1992 anymore, 33k won’t cut it, gonna have to pay way more to convince someone to come to your home and do a good job taking care of your kids lol.

I agree with rage2 and killramos . No wonder your nanny gave notice.

An experienced reliable nanny makes more than that in Calgary. That's a market reality no matter what you feel is fair.

Hmm I disagree all my friends who have Filipino Nannies at least in calgary only pay $16 - 16.50 per hour taxed - of course I also have to pay their taxes and ei/cpp shit so it costs me more but their gross is 33k.

We've had two filipino nannies, the first one was already pregnant when we hired her the 2nd one is going back to school to be a nurse. What do you guys pay your nannies?

IE if I paid $20 per hour thats roughly half my hourly rate and I'd be paying my NET income from my job directly to my nanny.

So one of the parents quits their job to raise the kids. Or you move somewhere cheaper than Calgary.

When an Asian guy says you're being cheap, he's probably right. :P

If you're paying 1/2 your net income for a nanny, it clearly doesn't make sense to have a nanny in your family. Either have the wife stay at home, or go day care.

As for how much we paid, like you it was a last minute decision so there wasn't a whole lot of choice, but it was $16/hour for a 17 y/o just moved to the city from small town out east with 2 years of part time childcare experience and excellent references. Everyone else we interviewed was over $20/hour, and had whatever random issues where we had to adjust our schedule for theirs and didn't make sense. This was over 4 years ago, I'm sure it's more expensive today, especially if you live in a nicer area as they'll charge you more money.

We didn't want to TFW a Filipino nanny because I didn't want our kids growing up sounding like Diego when they talked. Seriously, we just didn't have enough time to go through that process. I'm sure it'll be cheaper going that route, especially live in, but it's hit/miss if you get a good one.

If your friends have a nanny, send your kids to thier house! That's pretty common and a great way to share costs. Nanny makes a little more, each family pays a little less.

I think we pay our Nanny 18.50 net. But if someone tried to steal her we would outbid them. We also pay for her flights home to Quebec if she wants to go and give her bonuses and shit. But she's part of the "team" that unlocks cash flow in our home.

A nanny really isn't an alternative to day care any more.

Right, forgot about bonuses. My number would be higher (around 30%) once we add bonuses too. Luckily, we never got there since we fired her before it was anywhere near the holiday season.

A nanny is only worth these days if the job you take pays you 6 figures, otherwise it's more cost effective to stay at home. Or you have enough disposable income where you can afford to buy a new BMW 3 series every year without giving a fuck.

I haven't done any calculations but intuitively it seems that 100k would be bare minimum for the lower income earner.

Well if I remember right, $100k income works out to about $75k take home. You're looking at $50k of expenses for a live-in nanny on the cheap end (salary, bonus, taxes, room and board), so you're only making $25k by hiring a nanny. Daycare, it's $15k a kid a year, unless nzwasp has 4 kids, makes no sense to go the nanny route especially if his income doesn't look like he can support a nanny comfortably. Of course no nanny is going to take care of 4 kids at once, even at $20/hr haha.

We have two kids and with the nature of my job I am often travelling which I really enjoy but don’t see much extra income. I am paid approximately 105k my wife earns more.

The reason I want a nanny rather than daycare is because most daycares close before 6pm which is when my wife would usually get home. And I travel usually around 1 to 2 weeks per month. I am thinking of paying more for the right nanny or getting an LMIA done for a live out nanny.

You’re not smooth or rich enough, or have a nice enough car to have anything to do with my ex nanny.
