Default Crowchild crash Jan 29 2018

    http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgar...rail-1.4508283

A car slammed into a concrete barrier, slid along it for 50 metres, burst into flames and plummeted into a southwest Calgary community on Monday morning, killing the driver and injuring the passenger.

Police say the 1997 Chevrolet Lumina was travelling south on Crowchild Trail S.W. around 1:45 a.m. and the driver exited onto the ramp to eastbound Glenmore Trail.

The driver didn't make the turn and that's when the car crashed into the barrier and slid along it, elevated above Glenmore and the community of Lakeview.

According to the police news release, the car eventually went over the barrier, landed on a grass slope and slid while on fire into a tree. It was completely engulfed in flames.
    Well that’s pretty epic.

If you're gonna go, you might as well do it in spectacular fashion.

Kinda sorta figured someone went sailing over the ramp when I saw accident reconstruction there and... no accident or car. Alcohol and shitty driving, what a way to go. Hopefully the passenger makes a recovery.

Drove through that area around 10:45 AM, heading west on Glenmore. Low and behold there was a pickup facing west, with obvious front-end damage, resting further up the embankment against part of the Crowchild overpass structure. I didn't see anything about that in the news.

"A female passenger was removed from the vehicle by a witness. However, the driver succumbed to their injuries inside the car," said police in the release.
Wow, props to that witness. This is out of a movie. I hope they get the recognition for the life saved.

There was a separate 7 vehicle pileup during the AM rush hour on Glenmore at the location - the truck you saw as probably from that. Chances are that the 7 car pileup was caused by people gawking at the earlier accident scene.

So spend more tax monies to save a driver like this from themselves?

More of a nanny state is not good because it moves us farther away from the very good goals of natural selection.

The Detroit automaker said it is recalling the 1997-2004 Pontiac Grand Prix, 2000-2004 Chevrolet Impala, 1998-1999 Chevrolet Lumina and 1998-2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, 1998-1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue and 1997-2004 Buick Regal "because drops of oil may be deposited on the hot exhaust manifold through hard braking

As if that's not how the world works now anyways.... Always care for the stupid!

Oh, you don't know how to park? Your car can parallel park for you!
Oh, you never taught your kids how to look both ways before crossing? We'll just tell drivers to drive 30kph even in the dead of winter at 8pm!
Oh, you don't want to work? Mincome!

I doubt some drops of oil on the exhaust would have caused the fire. More likely a punctured gas tank, or booze in the car.

That ramp design is a shit show and even with winter tires, I've slid a bit on it before going around that corner at a reasonable speed. Poor design imo.

The key is when you get sideways, keep it sideways, and accelerate through the whole turn sideways.

One of my favorite corners year round back in the day, but traffic has made it uninteresting.
