Which vacuum line was toast? Is it the line to the wastegate? I'm glad you ripped into it, it will be worth fixing it.

It was a hard line from the vacuum block to the small turbo that used a banjo bolt to seal to the small turbo. The banjo bolt was literally just finger tight and soot everywhere. Based on that and the exhaust manifold gaskets leaking (front 3 nuts were not tight) someone must have been in here before even though I have no history of it.This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. I'm no expert on BMW plumbing or diesel plumbing... or even the symptoms you were having... BUT wastegates are tough little suckers and I think it's more likely that the signal to the wastegate was the problem and not the wastegate itself. Put some psi from a compressor into the wastegate actuator line and see if it opens. A good cleaning and new gaskets and crush washers all around might be what you need. Check the parts the best you can before shipping them out for a more expensive diagnosis.
@Twin_Cam_Turbo , Thinking of placing the '14 X5 for sale in early spring. It is not an M Sport BMW but it checks many boxes:
-One owner, no accidents (some door dings, some rock chips on original windshield)
-Reliable N55 (full service records history, only oil changes, and cabin filter changes)
-Balance of Factory Extended Warranty until 100KM or Dec. 2022 (credit 1,000$ at the end of a warranty)
-Optional 7 seats
-M Performance Power Pack Kit (320hp 320tq)
-21" M Performance forged wheels 599M, tires 90%, no scratches or scrapes.
-Invisihitch 2" hitch and hidden receiver (used for bicycles only, no wiring harness for towing)
-85,000 km
-18" winters Blizzak from tirebob
Thanks but X5 is just too large for us.This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
As a BMW fan, there is definitely better driver feel and comfort in the X5 vs the X3 when I test drove them, but I get what you mean by the size. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
In today's standards, the X5 seems small compared to the new crossovers like the Palisade, Atlas, etc...
My X5 is a very pleasant size for what you get.

Bump fixed my BMW and the turbo Alamo rebuilt 1700km ago has failed catastrophically this time.
That blows.
God damn. Hopefully there is a warranty. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Are these turbos particularly bad or something?
I know BMW’s are expensive to fix but they typically aren’t straight up unreliable so it sounds to me like a shitty job on the turbo rebuild / a turbo that was too far gone to be rebuilt?
That or an underlying undiagnosed issue that’s frying your turbos?

I posted in another thread months back but the turbo didn’t even need to be rebuilt, the actual issue was an exhaust restriction that both shops missed and I eventually found. They rebuilt it without authorization and it’s likely failed because they messed up the rebuild it didn’t even need. So far I’m about $2500 into this bullshit rebuild that I didn’t even need in the first place but now the turbo is totally failed leaving me in an even worse position. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Gotcha. Wasn’t aware of that context. That sucks.

My understanding is a lot of turbo "rebuilds" are bogus nowadays. Modern oem design turbos have features which don't lend themselves well to rebuilding/remanufacturing.This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Ran into that with an LML. No specific comment on BMW's.

This is what the turbo looks like now.
uh, this is simply not true. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
BWMs have had many generations of catastrophic design flaws across a range of engines.
Manufacturer reliability rankings and statistics suggest otherwiseThis quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

The old n/a engines (except for S54 which ate bearings every 30k kms lol) were all stout for sure, those are still available in some models. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Even the turbo 4 is pretty reliable. But the turbo sixes have been hot garbage for a long while (not the engine itself, but auxiliary issues like turbos and high pressure pumps).
I cannot comment specifically on the diesel.
Also surely manufacturer reliability ratings never lie, and we all know 60% of the time stats are 100% correct.

N54 was problematic for the reasons you describe, but they are 2-3 engine generations later from that 6. They were phasing that engine out in 2012.
N55 and B58 have been very stout.
And I refer to rankings of manufacturers, not data from the manufacturers themselves. People whining about blowing up their engines with JB4’s on the internet aren’t exactly the most representative data source on the planet either.
Probably the worst thing lately is the blown V8’s burning oil. But that’s not really a dead on side of road issue.

Our now sold X1 (2018) got to 100k without a single issue. Combined 100k between two E90s with S65s and no issues, on stock bearings. Just need to buy the right engines, everything else seems pretty reliable as far as electrics go.
