Default electronic gravel traps for F1

I think @rage2 and I were discussing this the other day, and I just saw this article pop up on the very idea.

It’s time for “electronic gravel traps” to save F1 from itself
Tarmac replaced gravel and grass runoff for safety, but it has a drawback.

Pffftt!! What's the problem?! You dislike a pass, so you steer right and completely skip the next corner. An eye for an eye.

That's^ some exciting shit! Pirelli will simply develop Canyonero tires to make it over the sharpened kerbs and through the gravel/moat/alligators or whatever they put out.

As Lewis says, this is how racing should be.

    Bonus:

    Another good battle:

That’s racing when nobody’s an asshole.

I'm sure Lewis was mystified over that thing Alonso was doing called "defending down the inside".

Could we just attach an electrode to each drivers nutsack instead?

    I think it's a great idea.

I highly prefer actual gravel traps, but can understand that they don't want to build circuits with them because teams won't test there, etc. Given that, electronic gravel traps are a close second.

I’m picturing golf cart in no go zone style traps

Basically this is the same for me. Actual gravel traps are the best, but gone now.

Without something being done, racing is going to turn into people using the track runoff for "safety" and then just waiting to see if the stewards ask them to give up the position. Passing will now turn into a guy slowing down on a straight and hoping a 7x world champion doesn't rear-end them like an N driver.

I see it clear as day, and I'm giggling. But even I have my limits on posting.

Note that both the Alonso and Perez vs Hamilton examples, runoff was available but wasn’t used at all. Runoffs aren’t the problem, drivers are. Arguing otherwise is like saying guns are the problem and not the people.

Alonso was the guy that invented using the runoff deliberately. He said he was going to do it, too. It was like when Trevor Bauer called out MLB on using sticky shit on baseballs for spin rate.

That’s a totally different issue, taking advantage of race director ignoring unfair advantage on lap 1. As a wheel to wheel racer, Alonso ranks with the best of them.

That's why Alonso made that point.

Hamilton knew exactly what he was doing in AD.

None of this would be needed if Max wouldn't drive like he intends to kill everyone else on the track. The massive crash in Silverstone I thought would teach him a lesson but I guess not. He's gonna need something even bigger to happen to realize that they way he drives is not racing.

That was clearly Hamilton's intent, you're right.

Intent isn't going to be made out but Max's aggressive driving as usual without wanting to ever yield even when he should caused that collision. But unfortunate part is that he hasn't changed his driving style at all. He's lucky that the technology is what it is these days and with the invention of halo and other safety measures the chances of getting seriously hurt are much lower, but he needs to be careful for other drivers and for himself in the future.
