I’ve only been watching F1 since 2013 (went to 2013 Montreal GP and loved it) so not an expert, however, anyone who thinks this was a satisfying end to a WDC is batshit. VER with his season is certainly deserving of a WDC but to any unbiased fan it’s clear he shouldnÂ’t have won yesterday’s race. If Masi isn’t gone after this season I think I’ll cancel my F1 subscription…an absolute disaster of a season for the FIA which resulted in his decision(s) in the final race directly handing the WDC to VER. Huge asterisk on the WDC and its unfortunate many people aren’t going to remember this season as great racing between HAM and VER and VER’s WDC, instead this season will be remembered for the controversies, especially in the final race, and there will always be the question of whether VER deserved it.

It’s very surprising how well HAM and his team are taking this. If I was in his shoes I would be talking to every media outlet about how shoddy the FIA and Masi are…he’s rich and can afford a few fines for trashing them and calling a spade a spade.

I hope Mercedes takes legal action so I can be entertained and see how it all plays out. Unlikely to result in a change to the WDC but the FIA deserves to be dragged through the mud.

The reason why Lewis was on the outside was the expectation that he didn’t get run off the track, and be a position in the more favorable inside line for the next corner. You don’t defend the inside on that corner or you’re compromised for the next one.

And yes, Lewis was definitely allowed room here. This wasn’t a fight at the apex.

Wouldn't you have to defend the inside going into T6? Though T7 is a right, though the next two corners after that are both lefts. Do you think Lewis would have left the door wide open on the inside if Max was a car length or two closer going into the braking zone?

I answered my own question, on lap 21 when there was another Red Bull trying to pass Lewis (back) at T6 he did cover the inside and therefore kept his place ahead.

I've read a few theories. The funniest one was "they under fuelled him to block Hamilton" but that's stupid, because he made it all the way to the last lap already haha.

The accepted answer was there was a potential water temp issues, and they feared a failure would've extended the SC so they stopped him instead. Realistically he probably could've finished the race, but there was no need as it wouldn't have won WCC.

That ending kind of summed up the season really.
The Perez defending on Hamilton was excellent though and was a key part of red bull's race while Bottas was stuck back in the pack.
Mercedes strategy though, couldn't Hamilton have matched one of the two stops by Max?

Yah, the first one he could have come in. I think Hamilton at that point had already communicated concern about going long on the tires. He said flat out it was a risk. RBR pulled the second stop which I think resulted in the long bleeped out Hamilton radio message

Well Hamilton did say at the beginning he wanted Max in front so he knew where he was. His awareness of this same setup time and time again is what is kind of funny. That stabilized video shows that Max executed that corner just fine in a head to head fashion, Lewis wanted to run the corner as he would unchallenged trying to make pretty fastest laps. I think he forgets he's racing sometimes, and rather than taking what's there (as you guys like to say, "aggressive") he tries to position himself in the track in the ideal spot. Which means he left the door open for taking what's there, and not covering that inside.

Me neither. I guess a replay just started on TSN and I watched about 8 minutes of it.
The cocky Dutch guy tried to make a pass way, way inside of a turn on the first lap so the cocky black guy went so fucking far off the track I think he was able to visit the concession while he cut the corner and gained a hilarious lead instead of actually being passed.
Some steward (maybe named Stuart) said this was A-OK.

So basically, this sport is as crooked as Ice Dancing was.
