Was 2018 really that "long ago"?
I agree that it's not "super recent" but it feels like some of us are talking about it like it was "the 70s" and I don't think that's accurate.

The hot hatch product hasn’t materially changed since then. The car market has though. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Do hot hatches really exist much any more?
I think its mostly in reference to 2018 being a period of normal car values. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Everyone is aware of trucks gonig bonkers, and I always for some reason peg it to a BMW price I always see. BMW 340's are routinely offered from dealers for over $100k these days. 4-5 years ago when the model was brand new, this was definitely not the case.
To sum up, back in the normal days of car pricing, $60k for the focus was astronomical
Yeah, I'd say so.This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Golf R
Corolla GR (mythical, to some extent, but exists)
Hyundai Kona N
A35 amg
civic type r
There's a couple more outside the NA market (e.g., Fiesta ST), but I'd say they still exist.
Over $100K for a 340? I don't think I've seen them quite that high, mid 80's seems to be the norm with low 90's for the fully loaded ones. Even at that price point it's ridiculous for a non "M" 3 series. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Pretty sad when the list of hot hatches only has 1 entry under 50k on there. Long gone are the days of affordable fun. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

I think inflation has been way more fucked than any of us want to admit.
Bonkers stuff

STi came to North America almost 20 years ago and was $50k. At 2% inflation it should be $75k today. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Integra Type R came to North America in 1997. From memory they cost around $35k. At 2% inflation they would be $58.5k today.
Not sure that prices are that out to lunch although COVID did screw a lot of things up.
As for Corolla GR, I think Toyota missed the timing again, not unlike FRS.
When I picked up 2004 Subaru STI hatch, I recall it was in the $42k range
_________
2019 IS350 AWD
20xx NX350 AWD
Picked up my RX8 in 2005 for $43k. According to the online Calculator that's equalvalent to $66k today.
Those were cool cars. My buddy had one and it handled like it was on rails. Too bad they didnt offer an option like the mazdaspeed 3 engine or something in it... I know it wouldn't have been as iconic but you gotta wonder. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Stop wondering; pick up one with a toasted engine (should be plentiful) and swap in an LS.. or a 2JZ if you are feeling spendy. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
A35 is a thing still? Haven't seen inventory in those for ages
Thats a good idea. I always thought swapping an s14 240sx would be awesome. The s14's probably go for more money than any RX8 these days. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
fuck that, rotary for life. rev to the moon
but yes realistically, the car would be way more fun with another 100hp
